On July 16, 1969, while astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins were on their way to the moon, a 14-year-old boy in Roseville was fishing at Dry Creek when he became startled by what he could only describe as a gorilla. He was so startled, in fact, that he fainted.
When he regained consciousness, he fled the area and reported his sighting to the Roseville Police Department.
The July 17, 1969, Roseville Press Tribune reported:
“…[Sgt.] Wanish said he and two reserve officers searched both sides of the creek with negative results. No footprints or traces of such a creature could be sighted…Police, however, did find and return the boy’s fishing equipment.”
It should be noted that the article in the Roseville Press Tribune began by asking the question: “Does Roseville have its own hairy-type creature as reported seen in Butte County and the Oroville area?”
Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the existence of what is commonly known as “Bigfoot.” We can’t say for sure what the 14-year-old boy saw near Dry Creek in 1969. Many experts mistake black bears for Bigfoot as they sometimes stand on their hind legs. Could that be what startled the boy? We’ll never know.
