On June 19, 1880, renowned artist Clarence Hinkle was born in Auburn, California. Hinkle was an artist whose work evolved from American impressionism to abstract and then to more literal interpretations that revealed his growth from impressionist to modernist.
In 1898 Hinkle studied art locally at the Crocker Art Gallery and in 1900 at the California School of Design in San Francisco. He later studied in New York and Philadelphia; then abroad in Europe where for six years he studied art in various countries including France, Italy and Spain.
Hinkle began his teaching career at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design in 1917. In 1922 he moved to Laguna Beach where he was an active member of the Laguna Beach Art Association.
He was a well-regarded teacher, mentor and artist and his works are still highly sought-after by collectors. Some of his paintings are on display at the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach.
His father, Amos Hinkle, co-owned the White & Hinkle Wagon Shop in Auburn where, in 1877, they built an Auburn U.S. Mail stagecoach. This stagecoach was later restored by Parlor 59 of the Native Sons of the Golden West who donated it to the Placer County Museums. It now sits in the Placer County Museum gallery in the historic Auburn Courthouse.
Although Hinkle is buried in Santa Barbara, his parents and 1-year-old sister, Olive, are buried in the Old Auburn Cemetery.
