Environmental Health specialists, best known for restaurant inspections, also inspect 571 active pools, spas and splash pads across Placer County, covering public, commercial and multi-family residences.
Specialists do annual or biannual checks to ensure pools and spas are enclosed to prevent unsupervised access by children, and look for entrapment and drowning hazards from improper recirculation systems. They also examine water chemistry to prevent germs from causing illness and to keep the water safe for skin contact.
Why? Poorly maintained pools can cause recreational water illnesses — resulting in diarrhea, skin rashes, swimmer’s ear, pneumonia, and eye or respiratory irritation.

On June 6, 1936, the festivities of the Gold Rush Revival in Auburn were underway. California Governor Frank Merriam led the parade that rainy morning, but he wasn’t the only celebrity on the rain-soaked streets of Auburn. Paramount Studios decided to film parts of the Gold Rush Revival for their newsreel and sent veteran cinematographer Joe Rucker.
Rucker was the cameraman on Admiral Byrd’s first expedition to Antarctica in 1928. He and fellow cameraman, William Van der Veer, won the 1930 Academy Award for Cinematography for the documentary film, “With Byrd at the South Pole.”
Rucker also filmed the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, the aftermath of the 1923 Tokyo earthquake and the Chinese Civil War in 1927. During World War II, Rucker filmed battles in the Pacific Theater from onboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. In 1957 Rucker passed away in San Francisco.
A rock spur in Antarctica was given the title Rucker Spur, named in his honor by the Advisory Committee on Antarctica Names.
