On May 28, 1926, several silent film stars and one well-known producer, Cecil B. DeMille, wrote letters of congratulations to Max Blumenfeld for opening the New Roseville Theatre.
Demille wrote, “Accept my congratulations on your New Roseville Theatre. When men like yourself place their money behind motion pictures in such a definite fashion it is proof of the great progress being made by this industry of ours. My best wishes for your continued success.”
Blumenfeld got his start in the film industry with Nickelodeon in San Francisco in 1917. He soon realized there was a terrific need, and in the 1920s he began building theaters throughout Northern California, including the New Roseville Theatre, which opened May 22, 1926.
The New Roseville Theatre became the Roseville Theatre in 1940. It operated as a movie theater until 1987 when the Magic Circle Theatre took over management. Magic Circle took over both the Roseville Theatre and the Roseville Tower Theatre and focused instead on live action plays. Magic Circle Theatre operated until 2010. Today, the Roseville Theatre is home to the Roseville Theatre Arts Academy.
In 1926, silent film star Vera Reynolds wrote, “I love Los Angeles, but I would give everything to be in Roseville to see the lights twinkle on for the first time in front of your New Roseville Theatre.”
