 On May 14, 1935, a group of over 200 Auburn residents traveled to the state capitol in Sacramento to meet with Governor Frank Merriam and invite him to the Auburn Gold Rush Revival, which would take place June 1-2. The governor welcomed many of them into his private office where they delivered an official letter from Auburn Mayor J.L. Elder.
In part, the letter read: “Whereas no celebration of this magnitude and importance can be complete without the presence of the Chief Executive of the Great State of California; Now therefore I, J.L. Elder, by the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Auburn, do hereby formally and cordially invite you to be present and take part as our honored guest during the celebration.”
The governor expressed his desire to attend but could not promise he’d be there. He was committed to opening the San Diego Exposition on May 29-30 and wasn’t sure he could make it back from Southern California in time.
Ultimately, Merriam was unable to attend, and he sent Herb Davis, executive officer of the California Fish and Game Commission, as his personal representative.
