On April 30, 1945, the U.S. Army submitted a press release to newspapers in areas where German prisoners of war, or POWs, were being held. An excerpt of the release in the May 3, 1945, Auburn Journal informed readers that:
“It has come to the attention of Army officials that many high school students have marked the prisoner of war identification upon their clothing as a prank. The large white “PW” printed upon a man’s clothing indicates he is a prisoner of war. It is an extremely dangerous practice for students to do this, for military personnel believing them to be escaped PWs may shoot, if they do not halt when ordered to do so!”
German POWs were being held at Camp Flint in Auburn during the latter half of World War II. The prisoners performed various duties at the U.S. Army’s DeWitt General Hospital. It is unclear if any local high school students participated in the ‘”PW” prank the U.S. Army was concerned about.
To learn more about this facet of our history, please visit the DeWitt History Museum, located at 2985 Richardson Drive in North Auburn and is open Wednesdays from 12 to 4 p.m.
