The Fire Break Discing Program encourages property owners to create a 20 foot fuel break along roadsides and property boundaries to prevent the spread of a fire started on or near your property. Last year, the Greater Lincoln Fire Safe Council mailed letters to 2,500 residents in our area. In the past three years, 46 roadside fires were stopped by discing efforts!
The following are the 2024 Disc Fire Break Program recommendations:
- On vacant lots, tracts of wildland, farmland, or large residential properties, disc a fire break line 20 feet wide adjacent to roadways and/or property lines.
-
A good time to disc is any time after growth but before fire season as discing in rock hard dirt and dry grass can cause a fire.
If you do not have access to equipment to disc your property line, you may consider mowing an equivalent or wider fire break to help slow the spread of a fire or asking a neighbor to extend their project to include your property.
The Greater Lincoln Fire Safe Council thanks you for your support of the annual Fire Break Discing Program.
