Secure peace of mind this rainy season: Make sure you’re insured for flooding
On Jan. 9, 1933, Elisabeth Roumage was returning from a mushroom harvesting trip when she encountered dense fog in Auburn. Just past the Cherry Street Bridge over the railroad, she lost track of the road and drove off the embankment. Her car fell some 35 feet and violently crashed to the ground. Hearing her cries for help, Otis Owens and Wendell Robie raced to her rescue.
They had to break open part of the top of the car in order to extricate Roumage. According to the Jan. 12 Auburn Journal:
“Mrs. Roumage refused to be taken to a hospital in an ambulance which had been summoned and was taken to her home in the private car of Wendell Robie. An examination by Dr. Lewis disclosed no broken bones or serious injuries.”
Roumage, who was very active in civic and community affairs, was the daughter of Col. Walter Scott Davis, who served in Company F of the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. Her husband, Fred Roumage, served as an officer in the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. Elisabeth Roumage died in 1948 and is buried next to her husband in the Old Auburn Cemetery.
