On Nov. 13, 1961, a 60-foot white fir pine tree was loaded onto a large semitruck in Foresthill by the Hughes Bros. Lumber Company. The beautiful, massive tree was secured to the trailer, and the driver slowly pulled onto the road to begin the 460-mile journey south. The Placer County evergreen was selected to be the featured Christmas tree at Disneyland.
A small forest of Placer County trees over the decades have been adorned with Christmas lights and placed in such significant public places as the State Capitol in Sacramento; Washington, D.C.; and popular privately-owned theme parks such as Disneyland.
Coincidentally, on Nov. 13 of this year, the Placer County Museums staff began working hard to set up our seasonal displays, so they can be ready to view in full on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
We interpret various holiday topics such as Victorian Christmas at the Bernhard Museum, a Cornish Christmas at our Griffith Quarry Museum, Holidays on the Homefront at our DeWitt History Museum, Christmas Day 1849 at our Gold Rush Museum and Christmas at the Courthouse at our Placer County Museum, where we already have our Christmas card scavenger hunt underway. Kids of any age who find all the cards can pick two pieces of candy from our office! Learn more
