The Placer County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a proclamation on Tuesday in support of Israel and to honor the lives lost in the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group.
The proclamation states that Placer County joins cities, counties and states across the nation in declaring there is no place for terroristic violence and condemns the acts of Hamas, which resulted in 1,200 deaths, thousands of injuries and 150 hostages as of Oct. 11.

Public safety
The Placer County District Attorney’s Office will be implementing a Retail Theft Vertical Prosecution Program with a $2 million state grant to address the growing problem and its negative impacts on safety, retailers and tax revenue. Read more

On Oct. 20, 1956, The Great Alexander, a renowned magician who began his career in Vaudeville, performed at the State Theater in Auburn. Alexander was a magician and mentalist who performed psychic tricks. He claimed to be a world traveler – he wasn’t – and had beautiful, expensive chromolithograph posters that were labeled “Bombay” though they were really printed in the United States.
But, The Great Alexander, aka Alexander the Crystal-Seer (Claude Alexander Conlin), died in 1954. How could he perform in Auburn in 1956? That’s because of another Vaudeville magician, Leon Giglio, aka Mandrake the Magician. Coincidentally, there was a popular comic strip that began in 1934 titled “Mandrake the Magician” in which the main character wore a top hat, a black cape with scarlet inner lining and a pencil-thin mustache – just like the real Mandrake the Magician.
It’s unclear if Leon Giglio had changed his stage name before the comic strip or after, but in either case, each party tacitly agreed to cross-promote each other. In the early 1950s, Leon purchased Alexander’s chromolithograph posters and materials from a man who bought them when Alexander retired in 1944. Because the posters were so beautiful, Leon decided to perform as The Great Alexander but just along the Pacific coast.
He performed up until 1985 and died in 1993.
