The July 25, 1924, edition of The Roseville Press Tribune reported that the immense forest fire near Foresthill was finally under control. According to the article, over 500 men were on the fire line and in all one herd of 72 cattle and one saddle horse were lost. The fire was estimated to be 75-100 square miles or 48,000 – 64,000 acres.
1924 was a bad year for forest fires in California, so much so that the U.S. Forest Service issued a fire bulletin to various chambers of commerce around the state, including the Placer County Chamber of Commerce.
The Forest Service requested a three-day organization campaign to unite citizens of the state to meet the present emergency. Many of the men fighting forest fires at the time were volunteers.
Almost 70% of the more than 800 forest fires in California by mid-July were started by careless acts of smokers, campers and brush burners.
The Forest Service has waged a continuous battle to prevent forest fires.
In 1937, President Roosevelt kicked off a national campaign with Uncle Sam portraying a forest ranger.
In 1944, the Smokey Bear wildfire prevention campaign kicked off and remains the longest-running public service campaign in U.S. history.
