On May 5, 1925, two notorious outlaws, who escaped from San Quentin Prison the month before, slipped through a Placer County cordon set by law enforcement near Colfax. Joe Tanko and Floyd Hall were convicted of murdering San Bruno Police Chief Arthur Meehan in 1923 and sentenced to life in prison.
But on April 7, 1925, they escaped and remained one step ahead of law enforcement for weeks. Several times the men passed through portions of Placer County and in the first few days of May were known to be in the vicinity of Colfax. It was then that law enforcement, including Placer County Sheriff Elmer Gum, cordoned off a wide area around where the men were thought to be. But on May 5, it was discovered the men made their way to Nevada City where they stole a car. Through their “reign of terror,” they robbed people and businesses; stole several cars; and killed one person.
Ultimately, Floyd Hall was caught May 14 in Sacramento. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of H.J.HJ Litzberg, but that sentence was later overturned and reduced to a life sentence. Joe Tanko was on the run for over a year before being fatally shot in a shoot-out with law enforcement in San Francisco on Nov. 13, 1926. Though serving a life sentence, Floyd Hall was paroled in 1956. Learn more about Placer County's Museums
