The historic Placer County courthouse lit up blue and yellow this week in support of Ukraine. Our hearts go out to the people overseas and the people in our community who have been affected by this tragedy. For those interested in expressing their support, there will be a candlelit vigil held at the state capitol this Sunday, March 6, at 5 p.m. hosted by the local organization Ukrainian American House. In honor of Women’s History Month, we recognize the contributions to Placer County by Berenice Pate. On March 10, 1966, Berenice announced her candidacy for Auburn City Council. Berenice, who moved to Auburn with her husband, Dr. Waldo Pate, in 1945, was known for her interest and work with American Indians. She served on the State Indian Affairs Commission as executive secretary and had a large collection of American Indian baskets. She was twice elected to the Auburn City Council, including her campaign in 1966, and served as mayor from 1970 to 1972. In 1986, she donated a large portion of her basket collection to the Placer County Museums.
To learn more about Berenice Pate and to see some of the baskets she donated, you can visit the Placer County Museum in the historic Courthouse in Auburn or the DeWitt History Museum in North Auburn.
