Dear Friends and Neighbors:

It is the wonderful winter ski season here in Placer County and we are lucky to have our very own search and rescue team serving alongside our Sheriff deputies.

Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue (SAR) is a volunteer, 501 c(3) non-profit that works under the direction of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office for search and rescue functions and mutual aid. They are the premier winter environment search and rescue group in the Tahoe area mountains, have served our community for more than 44 years and have 500 saves in that time.

In January 2020, we had a horrible incident where one individual perished and another was seriously injured in an avalanche here in Placer County. (Click Here for the Full Story – Fox40) Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue wants you to be prepared for the next time you are out on the mountain with these important tips:

  • When you go out into the winter environment, be prepared physically and mentally with the proper gear and knowledge.
  • Know what to look for concerning avalanche terrain.
  • Understand basic winter survival skills and execute them early to save energy and increase your odds of surviving and being rescued.
  • Have a plan: advise family and friends where you are going, how long you plan to be gone and where you plan to park.
  • Travel with a partner whenever possible, it is not only more enjoyable but also much safer.
  • If you do find yourself lost or injured, stay put. It is much more difficult to rescue a victim on the move

For more information on winter survival tips or information about this special team, I encourage you to visit www.TahoeNordicSAR.com. Go out and enjoy the majesty our county has to offer! We are so blessed to have these activities only a few miles from our doorsteps, but we must always stay vigilant and safe.

Have a fantastic February and I look forward to seeing you very soon.
