Excessively hot temperatures - spiking to an unimaginable-in-March 104 degrees - made for a toasty 17th Annual ONE-PS Picnic & Community Expo on Saturday, March 21. But it didn't stop an estimated 1,100+ attendees - including sponsors, neighborhood organizations, businesses, City staff, nonprofits, food vendors and more - from gathering for an afternoon of friendship and community engagement.
This year’s event was our largest ever, with over 80 booths or exhibits and nearly 100 organizations and sponsors participating. Palm Springs residents experienced more neighborhood associations, local companies, community organizations, and sponsors this year than ever before.
Shout out to Desert Water Agency for providing ice cold, thirst quenching hydration throughout the day! How much, you ask? The DWA crew handed out 480 cans (20 cases!) to the thirsty crowds!
Special thanks to picnic committee members Joy Meredith, Cat Gallivan, Dave Manley, Brian Eggert, Tim Schoeffler, and Jasmine Sullivan-Waits. Big shout-out and thanks to Police Chief Andy Mills for judging the Best Neighborhood Booth competition and PSPD Capt. Gus Araiza for judging the Dog Contest. Kitty Alvarado was amazing as always as the contest emcee!
And we couldn't have done it without Carlene Hart and her 20 wonderful College of the Desert volunteers, who arrived early, stayed late, and did all we asked of them and more!

Speakers Tamara Hedges (Desert Wildlife Center), Nick Gonzalez (Director of Parks & Recreation, and Jana FitzGerald and Katherine Hatch (Palm Springs Parks Foundation) provided valuable and interesting information during their presentations.
Tamara Hedges gave ONE-PS meeting attendees some tips on how to co-thrive with wildlife in the City, specifically baby birds during nesting season. One of the slides is below. See the presentation in it's entirety here: How to Co-Thrive with Wildlife in Palm Springs
The Foundation launched in 2024 in partnership with the City's Parks & Recreation Department. The Foundation's strategic priorities include expanding access to water features, drinking fountains and water play areas across the parks, investing in shade structures and climate-conscious designs, and supporting programming, amenities and infrastructure that bring people together and activate underutilized spaces. Updates included park projects - many are well underway and many more are in the planning stages! Nick also talked about a marketing refresh for VillageFest and a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sunrise Park. See how much is going on over in the Parks & Rec Department - so many great events and activities and many more ahead! Department of Parks & Recreation Updates
Congratulations to Little Beverly Hills resident David Hyams, the City of Palm Springs’ 2026 Senior Inspiration Awards honoree! The event, held March 27 at the Grand Hyatt Indian Wells, honors seniors across the Coachella Valley for their extraordinary volunteer work. Thank you to 4th District Supervisor V. Warm Sands Chair Tom Oliver led the March 31 meeting, and among the issues discussed was the plan to create diagonal parking spaces along the frontage of 600 and 650 E. Sunny Dunes Road. Businesses in the area were anxious to see this come to fruition, and on April 30, work will begin! The first phase will include concrete work such as modifying the curb, gutter, and sidewalk to create ADA-accessible ramps. The second phase, beginning May 1st, will involve asphalt grinding and adjusting water valves and parking stall slopes. Sunny Dunes Road will remain open throughout the project, and no significant disruptions to businesses are expected. See photo below for details.

I’ve attended many annual neighborhood meetings in my nearly 10 years with the City, but this was the first to kick off with a little belly dancing! Paulette Rees-Denis led attendees through a few stretching exercises before handing out belly dance skirts - it was all in good fun. Great turnout and an engaged group!
