What’s Cool This Season (and Hot Next Season): Heat Pumps
Heat pumps and heat pump water heaters (HPWH) are the most efficient and cleanest options for heating and cooling buildings, and the nation is catching on. In 2023, Americans bought 21% more electric heat pumps than fossil gas furnaces (Canary Media). Here’s what you should know:
-
Heat pumps: Transfer heat between two spaces. To warm a home, move outside heat, inside. To cool a home, moves inside heat, outside.
-
HPWH: Take heat from surrounding air to a water in an enclosed tank.
How are they more efficient?
-
Both heat pumps and HPWH use electricity, not gas, to transfer heat instead of generating it, which makes them not only cleaner than gas-powered appliances but 3-4 times more efficient.
SVCE offers customers thousands of dollars in rebates as well as a free live expert help for both heat pumps and HPWHs. These rebates can be paired with other SVCE, regional, state and federal offerings for whole-home electrification.
Looking to explore further? Our comprehensive Heat Pump Water Heater Best Practices Guide details everything from water tank sizing guidelines to electrical panel capacity. Use the guide to install your own system or work with a contractor to find the perfect fit for your home and lifestyle.

Los Altos Hills Ribbon Cutting + Tour
We're excited to invite you to Los Altos Town Hall on August 29 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. to celebrate the completion of the Backup Energy Storage Project.
Connected to the Town Hall’s existing solar system, the new backup battery will store clean energy the panels generate and discharge that energy as backup power should an outage occur. Without a battery system, the panels would return the energy generated back to the grid, but now the stored energy will maximize the Town’s solar generation and increase resiliency.
The project features an interactive kiosk where residents can learn how the clean energy generated at the Town Hall reduces local emissions, improves air quality, and contributes to a more resilient Town. The backup battery and kiosk were partially funded by SVCE Community Grants, receiving $120,000 from the grant program.
Join us for a short ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by lunch and a facility tour.
