Welcome to the SVCE Monthly Newsletter
Welcome to our new readers who signed up to receive our newsletter at one of the many Earth Month events we attended in April. As a reminder, Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) is a public, not-for-profit agency that provides clean electricity for 270,000 residential and business customers across 13 Silicon Valley communities. Since 2017, SVCE has committed over $1.8 billion to renewable energy projects while saving customers more than $77 million in electricity costs. Clean Up Your Kitchen with Induction Cooking
Preparing food is often how we show love to others. But as important as the ingredients is how the food is prepared, which can make the difference between a clean, healthy kitchen or one with emissions from a gas stovetop. Did you know that emissions from gas ranges can result in unsafe levels of air toxins in our homes? At the same time, gas ranges contribute to climate change by burning or leaking methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
Induction stovetops will cook your food with clean electricity – no nasty toxins in your kitchen. These stovetops produce their heat through magnetic induction, and by doing so they are faster, safer, and more energy efficient than gas stoves or traditional electric-resistance stoves. They lower health risks, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and are easier to clean. This article will briefly explain induction stovetops, how they work, their benefits, and whether one might be the right choice for you.

The Carbon-Free, Geothermal Project That Will be Powering Your Home Soon
As part of SVCE’s approach to having a diverse mix of carbon-free power sources, SVCE has contracted to build and receive energy from a new binary geothermal facility located in Mammoth, CA. Casa Diablo IV is the first new geothermal project built for the California grid in almost 30 years.
Geothermal is an important renewable resource because it produces energy 24 hours a day. When solar and wind are not producing, geothermal continues to add energy to the grid. Having geothermal in the SVCE power mix, and on the CA grid also increases resilience and reliability by providing clean energy around the clock.
Casa Diablo IV is under construction and is expected to begin providing clean, carbon-free energy to SVCE in summer 2022.
Watch the video below to learn about how geothermal power uses heat from under the Earth’s surface to create clean energy, and how this project’s innovative closed-loop system makes this an emissions-free, renewable energy source.

Rooftop Solar + Battery Storage = Energy Independent
If your home is vulnerable to power outages, such as from PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs, solar paired with battery storage will help keep your lights on. If there are outages, a home battery can keep your appliances and medical equipment running for a few hours to a few days depending on capacity and use.
Plus, when your home is not at risk of a power outage, you can use stored energy during the late afternoon or evening, to avoid pulling energy from the grid when it is most expensive. Learn more about how batteries can benefit your home with these educational videos, and explore your options online with the no-obligation concierge service offered on the SVCE Solar + Battery Assistant.

FutureFit Fundamentals – Supporting Demand for All-Electric Technologies
SVCE has partnered with the San Jose – Evergreen Community College District Workforce Institute to launch the ‘FutureFit Fundamentals’ contractor training program. As building codes and consumer preferences continue to shift toward all-electric systems in the home, the program helps to prepare contractors.
Qualified contractors, apprentices, and tradespeople in Santa Clara County can receive a $500 stipend upon completion of the training. The online course provides a robust update on current all-electric building practices and can be completed within 5-7 hours. If you know someone that may be eligible, please share the opportunity with them by forwarding this newsletter. Learn more and register for the course at https://bit.ly/FFF-register.
Here is what people are saying about the FutureFit Fundamentals course:
“The course was very informative, well-structured and the presentation was excellent. When I received the invitation I gave it to the mechanical lead engineer and the electrical lead engineer. We are going to pool our stipends together and take the entire design department out to lunch and discuss the concepts we learned from the course. Thank you so much.” – John, lead architect at Gordon Prill
“I just finished taking the SVCE Futurefit Fundamentals course. I am so glad that I did! As a solar professional, I want to be informed about the latest technologies so that I can help my customers who have questions about electrification. This course provided some helpful information about heat pumps and reinforced the numerous benefits of solar and battery storage systems.” – Jill Gile, Your Energy Solutions
