Communities Celebrate Five Years of Clean Power
This month marks five years of carbon-free electricity for residents and businesses, provided by Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE). Thirteen local communities formed SVCE as a public agency, to accelerate climate action, reduce emissions, and support regional decarbonization.
In the past five years, SVCE communities have:
- Reduced annual energy-related greenhouse gas emissions by 35% (compared to a 2015 baseline)
- Saved $77M on energy bill costs for all customers
- Avoided 575M pounds of greenhouse gas emissions
- Invested $45M to local customer programs
- Signed contracts for 12 new clean energy projects in CA
Your use of clean electricity is making a difference! SVCE looks forward to many more years of providing clean power and enabling climate action for our customers and communities.
Join us at the Cupertino Earth and Arbor Day celebration on April 23 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. to celebrate our 5th anniversary. Or, find us at one of the many Earth Day celebrations taking place this month, list below.

SVCE Cuts Ribbon on Largest Solar+Battery Storage Facility in the U.S.
In March, SVCE joined four other Northern California organizations to cut the ribbon on the Slate solar+battery storage facility, a Goldman Sachs Renewable Power project. The Slate project is the first newly developed renewable project to come online for SVCE (though many more are coming soon). The project, located in Kings County, CA, will provide SVCE 93 megawatts of solar and 46.5 megawatts of battery capacity - enough to power 24,000 homes. The clean power provided to SVCE by this project will help avoid 54,630 metric tons of CO2 on the CA grid annually.
SVCE prioritizes solar projects paired with battery storage to increase grid resiliency. The batteries store surplus energy during the day to be used during peak evening hours when solar generation subsides. Read the press release for more information about the project benefits.

Credits on Your Electricity Bill This Month
This month, SVCE customers may see a variety of credits on their energy bill.
-
California Climate Credit: A state-wide program that distributes money back to households and small businesses in the months of April and October. This month, all SVCE customers will receive a $39.30 credit automatically applied to their April bill.
-
CARE & FERA Rate Relief: In response to industry-wide rate increases, the SVCE Board of Directors approved $3M in bill credits. Beginning in April 2022, CARE/FERA customers will receive a monthly credit of $12.50 until November 2022, totaling $100.
-
California Arrearage Payment Program (CAPP): Working together with the State of California and PG&E, eligible customers have recently received a one-time bill credit as part of CAPP, a state program to help pay past due energy bill balances that have increased during the pandemic. Sunnyvale Residents Show How to Be Good Ancestors
In 1968, Geoff Ainscow and his wife, Bev, sailed from their birthplace in Manchester, England to the San Francisco Bay Area to become embroiled in the technological and social new age revolution taking place in California. They set up their home in Sunnyvale and raised two children. Geoff’s life experience combined activism and teaching to spread the knowledge of a living Earth and what humans must do to bring about a sustainable, just, and meaningful life.
Geoff and Bev have been curious seekers with a desire to be conscious global citizens, in large part by constantly finding ways to improve their home to be more environmentally sustainable. Inspired by a recent book, The Good Ancestor: How to Think Long-Term in a Short-Term World (Roman Krznaric), they decided they needed to share what they’re doing with others and partnered with Potluck Productions to do just that. In the video below, Geoff and Bev walk through their 1960s Sunnyvale home and explain how they are living more sustainably.
SVCE thanks Geoff and Bev for their enthusiastic willingness to share their story and inspire others. The video was filmed in 2021, before Bev passed away. SVCE sends our deepest regards and appreciation to Geoff and the entire Ainscow family.

New Net Energy Metering Cash Out Rates
The Board of Directors approved updates to the SVCE Net Energy Metering (NEM) annual cash-out policy, effective May 2022 for the generation portion of solar customers’ bills. This change will only affect NEM customers that generate surplus electricity over an entire year. Most NEM customers will see no change in their NEM compensation.
Under the updated policy, SVCE will pay customers two (2) times the Net Surplus Compensation rate (NSC) for excess solar generated annually, and two-and-a-half (2.5) times the NSC rate for income-qualified customers (CARE/FERA participants). For more information on the updated tariff visit: svcleanenergy.org/solar.
