Electricity Rates Changing for Many Customers – See How
In June 2021, many PG&E and SVCE customers not currently on a Time-of-Use rate plan will be automatically transitioned to a Time-of-Use rate (peak pricing 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. every day). PG&E has begun mailing out notices to all customers who will be transitioned.
This Time-of-Use rate transition is a California state requirement, to help improve how electricity is used on the grid, and support California’s shift toward clean energy. The new energy rates are set based on when electricity is used. Using major appliances before 4 p.m. or after 9 p.m., when power on the grid is the cleanest and cheapest, can help reduce your energy bill and cut fossil fuel emissions across the state. More tips for how to save money on the new Time-of-Use rate can be found at svcleanenergy.org/time-of-use.
Customers who automatically transition are financially protected for the first 12 months with Bill Protection, which will credit you the difference if your electricity bill ends up being higher on the new Time-of-Use rate than it was previously. More information on Bill Protection can be found at svcleanenergy.org/bill-protection.
You Have Choices You can determine the lowest cost electricity rate for your home by visiting the PG&E Rate Comparison Tool. Customers may also return to their old, tiered rate or choose a different Time-of-Use rate at any time.
What is next? No action is required to be automatically transitioned to the Time-of-Use rate in June. Customers wishing to decline the automatic rate transition should take action before May 18, and contact PG&E through PG&E’s ‘Manage Your Account’ webpage. You will also see information that can help you choose another Time-of-Use rate that may work better for your energy needs. More information is available through PG&E at pge.com/TOUtransition or calling 1-866-743-7945.

Did you know that one of the biggest polluters in your home resides in your garage? And we're not talking about your gas-powered car... Natural gas water heaters are a large source of carbon emissions in homes, installing an efficient, electric heat pump water heater (HPWH) can reduce your indoor and outdoor pollutants and you will still get the same hot water (minus the carbon!).
The SVCE FutureFit rebate program provides up to $3,500 in rebates to customers who replace an existing gas or electric resistance water heater with a new electric HPWH. The rebates include $2,000 to replace a gas water heater with a HPWH or $1,000 to replace an electric resistance heater. With additional funding available for service panel upgrades for CARE/FERA customers.
Browse and compare electric HPWHs on Appliances Assistant. You can also learn more about HPWHs and their costs and savings in this A New Shade of Green article.

Electric Vehicles – Soon to Rule the Road
General Motors made global headlines with their January announcement that they plan to commit to an all-electric future by phasing out all gas-powered, light duty models by 2035. In February, Ford Europe announced that it will move to all-electric for its European models by 2030. Volvo Cars made a similar announcement in early March, stating its commitment to be become a fully electric car company by 2030.
What does this mean? As technology improves and EV adoption increases, so will the number of EV makes and models, capabilities and charging access. But you don’t have to wait to transition to all-electric driving. There are 60 EV and plug-in hybrid models currently available, from sporty sedans to all-wheel drive SUVs. You can browse these models on the EV Assistant to explore what vehicle best fits your needs and see what kind of personalized incentives are currently available to you.
