October is National Energy Awareness Month! While there are no energy efficiency carols or traditions, there are still ways to celebrate energy efficiency and use this time to re-evaluate your home’s energy use. The SVCE Do-It-Yourself Energy Saving Toolkit is an easy way to check-in on your home’s efficiency and provide quick fixes to improve it.
Since we all have a little extra time at home this year, it’s a good opportunity to make some small adjustments to increase comfort and savings. Phantom loads, which is the electricity used even when a device is off, is common with TVs, phone and laptop chargers, and gaming consoles. Check the DIY Energy Saving Toolkit out from your local library (which has safety measures in place) to find out which appliances are pulling extra electricity even when they are off. Use the infrared thermometer to find leaks in doors and windows, in addition to other efficiency-enhancing activities. Bonus: it is a great in-home learning activity for kids too!
