County allocates $500,000 for hazmat victims
not previously assisted by United Way
Great news for people impacted by the crisis at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove.
Today the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to allow $500,000 in discretionary funds from my office to assist residents and businesses evacuated and/or were impacted by the May 21 hazmat incident.
We had a near disaster of an exploding chemical tank that could have injured or killed many people, with an evacuation of 50,000 people. Some residents and businesses lost thousands of dollars while they were displaced over the long Memorial Day weekend. This money will help.
I have repeatedly stated that the community needs to be made whole from this crisis. My discussions with GKN led the defense contractor to create a $3 million fund, which was exhausted in two weeks leaving many people without aid.
I'm calling on GKN to replenish the fund. In the meantime, those who were unable to receive funds from United Way can access the fund I have created, which will be distributed by the City of Garden Grove.
More details will be coming soon about the County fund.
