County of Orange: Find blind veterans to receive free Meta smart glasses
Supervisor Janet Nguyen has asked Orange County’s Veterans Service Office to identify local blind and visually impaired veterans who could receive free Meta AI glasses that speak to the wearer, enabling them to see.
The revolutionary glasses have a speaker and interact with the wearer by reading printed words or describing what is in a line of vision.
Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg announced Sunday during the White House UFC Freedom 250 match that every veteran in America would be provided with Meta AI glasses for free.
“This invention is incredible and I want every vision impaired veteran in Orange County to have a pair of these glasses,” Supervisor Janet Nguyen said. “I don’t want to take it for granted that veterans could find out about this generous offer on their own. I want the County to be proactive and find these people, then help them navigate the process that will change their lives.
“Can you imagine losing your sight? We can never repay these brave veterans but at least we can make their lives better,” Supervisor Janet Nguyen said.
If you are a visually impaired veteran or know someone who is, call the Orange County’s Veterans Service Office at (714) 480-6555.
Orange County is home to an estimated 54,235 veterans. The largest demographic is aged 75 and older, however many younger veterans have lost eyesight due to explosions and other catastrophic injuries.
The Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) has partnered with Meta to train the service members on how to use the glasses, which are made by Ray-Ban. Veterans need to register with BVA, which is free, at https://bva.org/glasses.
