Dear Friends and Neighbors:
Progress continues to be made in the chemical spill incident in Garden Grove.
Yesterday evening, with the threat of a catastrophic explosion removed, 65% of evacuated residents were able to safely return home.
We are grateful for the work of our fire personnel and all the cooperating agencies managing the incident, as well as the staff and volunteers supporting the evacuees through this difficult time.
But despite the progress made, the threat of a chemical spill hazard or fire remains, and to ensure the safety of the community, a smaller area remains under evacuation orders- as the teams work to mitigate the danger.
The Unified Command team is working with the EPA and AQMD to monitor the air and water in the surrounding areas, and so far, no chemical has been detected. They will continue working with experts to plan for a full cleanup of the area.
We are asking everyone to continue to respect the evacuation orders and not attempt to return to the area until evacuations are fully lifted. If you do not need to be in the area, we ask that you stay away to ensure public safety personnel can do their work.
We know the situation is a real hardship for the families that were evacuated – especially for those whose homes remain in the danger area - but the safety of residents in the area remains the most important thing.

Se sigue avanzando en el incidente del derrame químico en Garden Grove.
Ayer por la noche, al eliminarse la amenaza de una explosión catastrófica, el 65% de los residentes evacuados pudieron regresar a casa de manera segura.
Estamos agradecidos por el trabajo de nuestro personal de bomberos y de todas las agencias cooperantes que manejan el incidente, así como del personal y los voluntarios que apoyan a los evacuados durante este difícil momento.
Pero a pesar del progreso logrado, la amenaza de un peligro por derrame químico o incendio continúa, y para garantizar la seguridad de la comunidad, una zona más pequeña permanece bajo órdenes de evacuación mientras los equipos trabajan para mitigar el peligro.
El equipo de Comando Unificado está trabajando con la EPA y AQMD para monitorear el aire y el agua en las áreas circundantes y, hasta ahora, no se ha detectado ningún químico. Continuarán trabajando con expertos para planificar una limpieza completa del área.
Pedimos a todos que continúen respetando las órdenes de evacuación y que no intenten regresar al área hasta que las evacuaciones se levanten por completo. Si no necesita estar en el área, le pedimos que se mantenga alejado para garantizar que la policía pueda realizar su trabajo.
Sabemos que la situación representa una verdadera dificultad para las familias que fueron evacuadas, especialmente para aquellas cuyos hogares permanecen en la zona de peligro, pero la seguridad de los residentes del área sigue siendo lo más importante.
