Our Health Expo was a great success

We held our 13^th annual OC Free Health Expo last weekend and it was a tremendous success! Over 1,000 people attended.

For the first time, we partnered with the Vietnamese American Physician Association of Southern California, who brought dozens of doctors from various specialties, along with Lestonnac Free Clinic and MEMO, a student-led medical training program. Our volunteer doctors provided free dental services — including extractions, cleanings, and fillings — as well as eye exams, prescription and reading glasses, flu shots, and doctor-patient consultations. Specialists included oncologists, cardiac surgeons, pulmonologists, and mental health professionals.

All of these services were completely free and open to everyone, though most of those we served were from low-income backgrounds. It was deeply rewarding to provide dental care to people who need it but can’t afford it. One man shared how thrilled he was to finally have an infected tooth removed — something he’d been unable to do for a long time.

I’m so grateful to all our volunteer doctors, technicians, and students who gave up their Sunday to serve our community. The people we helped appreciate them immensely — and so do I. We’ve even received requests to hold this event twice a year. While it’s a major undertaking to coordinate, we’ll do our best and see what 2026 holds!

County grants approved

I was proud to approve grant funding from the California Department of Insurance for the Life and Annuity Consumer Protection Program, which supports the District Attorney’s efforts to investigate and prosecute financial abuse involving life insurance and annuities.

I also supported a California Office of Traffic Safety grant to fund the District Attorney’s work prosecuting DUI cases and addressing traffic safety issues. Lastly, I voted to approve a Samueli Foundation grant for OC Public Libraries’ Regulation Station project, which will provide sensory-friendly programs and resources for families who need them.

Appointments from the First District

We appointed two representatives from the First District to serve on key County boards and committees. Eric McCoy of Huntington Beach was appointed to the Orange County Emergency Medical Care Committee to complete a term ending June 30, 2026. Michael Daniel of Huntington Beach and Troy Nguyen of Garden Grove were also appointed to the Orange County Workforce Development Board, where they will serve terms ending October 27, 2027.

My office is once again hosting mobile office hours throughout the First District. If you’d like to share feedback, discuss County issues or need help with services, stop by and meet my team. We look forward to seeing you there!

OC Emergency Pet Clinic anniversary

For 50 years, the Orange County Emergency Pet Clinic has saved the lives of our beloved animals with an impressive state of the art facility. Thank you to cofounder Dr. Malo and the great staff. Happy anniversary!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Board honored leading medical professionals who fight breast cancer as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Among the honorees is Wendy Nuval Bacerra, president of the Orange County Oncology Nursing Society.

This disease is almost completely treatable if it’s caught early. Please get regular screenings to live your fullest life.

Pacific Air Show

Garden Grove Mid Autumn Festival

The Autumn Festival in Garden Grove was beautiful, I had a great time. Thank you to the dancers, United Overseas Vietnamese Language Assn and the Regional Center of Orange County for all your work to bring us this community event.

Vietnamese American Experiences Model Curriculum conference

When I authored SB 895, my goal was simple: to preserve the stories of Vietnamese refugees and ensure they are taught in California schools. That vision became reality as over 400 educators came together to learn how to implement the new curriculum. Together, we are ensuring that history, sacrifice, and resilience are never forgotten.

Cleanup event

Dispose of bulky items, e-waste, and household batteries for free during Garden Grove’s final community cleanup of the year. The event takes place Nov. 8 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Garden Grove Public Works, 13802 Newhope St. Paper shredding will also be available.

The City of La Palma will host its inaugural Veterans Day Ceremony honoring those who have served our nation. The event will be held Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. Priority registration is available for La Palma veterans.

Join the community in honoring veterans and active service members at St. Isidore Historical Plaza. The celebration will be held Nov. 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. and features live patriotic music, student performances, and a salute to all six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
