A look at our Independence Day history
I like to say, “Happy Independence Day” instead of “Happy 4th of July.”
It’s because this is a reminder that we’re really celebrating the bravery of colonial Americans who fought against the British and won. Against all odds, our undermanned troops prevailed and beat back the British due to the brilliance of General George Washington, their determination, and the ability to utilize the terrain to their advantage.
Did you know that the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, was just a statement of intent? The Revolutionary War lasted eight years and didn’t end until 1783 when the Treaty of Paris was signed to formally recognize the United States and its borders.
While we celebrate with barbecues, parades and trips to the beach with family and friends, it’s on my mind that our troops suffered and more than 25,000 died. They gave the ultimate sacrifice so we could be free. These weren’t all soldiers – many were just regular people like you and I. They endured starvation, illness and bitter cold but fought on to protect this great country. Some at Valley Forge marched on frozen landscape with rags for shoes, leaving behind bloody footprints.
I continue to be amazed at the fortitude of our military service members – then and now. I’m so grateful to be an American and it’s my hope that we can all take a moment to remember those who made this possible.
