 The meaning of Memorial Day
Many of us are gathering Monday to be with family or friends for a barbecue or trip to the beach. These are standard activities in this wonderful place we call home – Orange County.
On Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember our fallen soldiers who have protected our country since the Revolutionary War. More than 651,000 military personnel have died in battle over the past 250 years.
Memorial Day began in 1861 when a Virginia grave was decorated belonging to the first Civil War soldier who died in battle. The first national observance of Memorial Day was in 1868. Decorating the graves of servicemembers has continued through the centuries on this day, with the biggest event being Arlington National Cemetery. Volunteers will place 400,000 flowers on the graves of our heroes as the President honors the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
I will be at several memorial services in the First District and hope to see you there.
