Hello constituents in the First District, excited to hit the ground running!

It’s hard to believe we are already in April! I started my new Supervisor term in January and it’s been a really busy time getting up to speed on all my priorities in the County. I still have many of the same cities from when I was in the California State Senate, but now I’m focused on everything local to your daily lives instead of trying to solve problems at the state level.

On the top of my list is looking at how the County spends money on homelessness and what are they doing to fix it. I’ve been appointed to the Homeless Commission to deal with this problem. I’m also looking at the animal shelter, the wasteful spending and fraud from my predecessor in office, ways to honor great constituents and more.

Major improvements coming to animal shelter

My first major victory on the Board was for our animals who doesn’t have a voice, so we are their voice. For more than a year, as a State Senator, I was advocating to make our animal shelter more transparent, clean, and available to the public.

I co-authored a measure with Supervisor Vincent Sarmiento, District Two, that unanimously passed the Board of Supervisors and will take effect in four months. The items included:

• Increase hours of public accessibility. Weekday hours of 2 – 5 p.m. will be increased to 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• Appoint a staff member as the community liaison to interact with the public and solve any concerns.
• Currently OC AnimalCare posts quarterly statistics on their website. This will increase to monthly to provide the community information quicker.

In addition, County staff will survey other Southern California jurisdictions that do trap-neuter-return programs of feral cats and bring back information to the Board to farther evaluate on how we can approach this issue. Orange County no longer does this practice due to legal concerns.

Local WWII vet turns 100

Happy 100th birthday to Irving Tucker of Huntington Beach, a WWII veteran who was at Pearl Harbor!! I also met Amil Van Dereck, 101 years old, also from WWII and Korean wars. Such an honor. The GREATEST GENERATION!!!

Storytime for children

I had the pleasure of participating in Reading Across America at Peterson Elementary School in Huntington Beach. It was a fun morning focused on spreading the joy of reading to young students.

Fountain Valley State of the City

I spoke at the Fountain Valley State of the City, where I shared updates on my priorities as County Supervisor, including the exciting Mile Square Regional Park expansion plan in collaboration with the City of Fountain Valley.

Your voice on the AQMD board

I was sworn in as an Air Quality Management District board member and we had our first meeting. I am on the side of the people and hope to curtail bad policies like outlawing gas heaters.

Seal Beach Rotary Club

I spoke at the Seal Beach City Rotary Club’s luncheon to provide an update on my work at the County, gas prices, and the importance of service clubs. Thank you to the club for the warm reception and for the good work you do in Seal Beach and beyond.

Appointed to OC Fire Authority

I was sworn in as the newest member of the OC Fire Authority’s Board of Directors. I’m excited to work with this agency and find ways to assist our great firefighters to protect our residents.

Dedicating a park in Huntington Beach

Weider Regional Park in Huntington Beach has a new playground! It was designed with features for all children to enjoy. Great work, OC Parks.

Save our beaches

Team Janet partnered with the Lions Club and Leos Club of Seal Beach for a beach cleanup organized by Save Our Beach. The recent rain left behind a lot of debris from the San Gabriel River, making this cleanup especially important. It was a great opportunity to give back, connect with the community, and help keep our beaches clean.

Meet OC’s own US Agriculture dog!

Bear is a US Agriculture dog based in OC who sniffs out forbidden plants and fruits carrying pests at mail distribution centers. This sweet pup gave a demonstration on a white box at our Board of Supervisors meeting today.

Los Alamitos’ newest park

I helped Los Alamitos celebrate the opening of this amazing play center at Sterns Park. Our children have a great new place to spend the day.

Appointment to the OC Commission to End Homelessness

Orange County has too many homeless for the amount of money we are spending every year. My goal is to bring down these numbers. I’m happy to be on this commission and get to work!

Valentine’s Day weddings

The County of Orange married 300 couples this Valentine’s Day. I had the honor of officiating several unions at the Old Court House in Santa Ana alongside Hugh Nguyen, our Clerk-Recorder.

Bunny hop in Westminster

Hop on over to your local Westminster parks on April 12 and April 19 for something springtime fun. Visit with the Easter Bunny, enjoy spring crafts, games, treats, Egg Hunt, and activities.

Free household hazardous waste disposal

Residents that are served by the Midway City Sanitary District can dispose of their Household Hazardous Waste items for FREE at any of the County's four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers. Please note, the OC Hazardous Waste Collection Centers are not permitted to accept waste from businesses, churches, schools, non-profit organizations or government agencies.

Fountain Valley Community Service Day

Community Service Day mobilizes hundreds of volunteers of all ages and interests to complete projects throughout Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley that will have a lasting impact in the community. The effort is organized by the Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council and numerous corporations, companies, and nonprofits. Join other volunteers from 9 a.m. to noon on April 26 for a community picnic and entertainment.
