On Thursday, I attended the 2022 Orange County Public Safety and Re-Entry Conference. Hosted by Project Kinship, this conference was amazing. Panelists included District Attorney Todd Spitzer, Dr. Veronia Kelley, and Project Kinship founder Steve Kim, among others. It was inspiring to hear all the work about progress that has been made to advance reforms in Orange County that promote public safety while also allowing our most vulnerable young people to get a second chance and live up to their potential. |

On Behalf of Supervisor Foley I attended the Open House for Casa de La Familia, a non-profit based in Santa Ana. Casa de la Familia was founded by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Ana Nogales to provide mental health services for Orange County residents. The COVID-19 pandemic showed the public the need for better mental health services. We at the County look forward to partnering with Casa de la Familia to help bridge that service gap.
Thursday, I attended Salt & Straw grand opening! They opened in Portland Oregon 16 years ago when two cousins decided to start making and selling ice cream. Salt & Straw uses locally sourced food products to create unique tasty flavors. Give them a visit! They’re located in 2001 Westcliff Drive, Suite 102, Newport Beach. I recommend their Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons.

Tomorrow, Supervisor Foley and I will join the Costa Mesa Historical Society for the Diego Sepulveda Adobe Grand Re-Opening. The event will take place at Estancia Park next to the adobe and will feature light refreshments, activities for kids and tours of the Adobe Museum. I hope to see you there.

The ability to have work-life balance is essential to one’s mental health and well being. This weekend, I did just that! I took a vacation day Friday and our family drove up north to visit my eldest at UC Berkeley for Parents Weekend.
We checked out Ella’s dorm, took her to eat at several favorite venues and went to their homecoming game against Arizona and we won!! During the visit, Ella had some school commitments to tend to Saturday morning and asserted herself, telling us nicely, to “go do your own thing and let’s meet up later.”
What made me most proud was that she was focused on meeting her commitments and didn’t allow for our visit to derail her responsibilities. Proud mama moment!! It was comforting to see my first born adjusting to her new surroundings, practicing her independence skills and settling into new routines.
At work, we constantly juggle competing priorities and commitments. The best part is I get to work with an awesome team of talented individuals. Together, we pool our strengths and resources to get things done! Like pulling off our first ever Sustainability Summit, led by our Sustainability Policy Advisor, Aviva. Read all about it in her section of the newsletter!

This week was the week! Supervisor Foley’s Sustainability Summit took place on Wednesday at the OCC Planetarium. The event allowed environmental experts and concerned citizens to come together and discuss how the County can advance sustainability and climate action. We got to hear from 15 fantastic panelists--including academics, activists, public officials, and business representatives—who gave rich and nuanced insight on the challenges and opportunities we face. We also heard keynote addresses from Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, Senator Dave Min, Congressman Mike Levin, and Congresswoman Katie Porter about their efforts at the state and federal level. In addition, five local groups—OC Waste & Recycling, OC Parks, Citizens’ Climate Lobby, OC Coastkeeper, and OC Goes Solar—tabled at the event. Perhaps my favorite part of the day was watching our guests submit their ideas for a sustainable Orange County on posters in the lobby. I’m excited to incorporate these ideas, and the ideas of our panelists, into Supervisor Foley’s environmental initiatives.
Thank you to the panelists, elected officials, tablers, OCC Planetarium staff, OCC Culinary Arts caterers, and 100 guests who made this summit a success. A video recording of the event will be available online soon. As always, I welcome your ideas for how to make Orange County a greener, healthier, more prosperous place. Just email me at aviva.meyers@ocgov.com

There is always so much going on here in District 2, I haven’t had the opportunity to properly introduce myself to our newsletter readers! My name is Annie, I recently graduated with my bachelor’s from San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!) with an Interdisciplinary degree. My three departments were Kinesiology, Public Health and Economics. While in San Diego I played on the Women’s Club Waterpolo team and was involved with many other student organizations. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to the beautiful beaches and my new job! When I spend time with friends, we like to take advantage of the beautiful parks and beaches that Orange County has to offer. I also enjoy traveling and was very lucky to study abroad in Portugal and Spain this past summer. |

First, thanks to everyone who submitted nominations for the Supervisor’s Veterans of the Year Awards! But don’t stop! The Supervisor will select more than one veteran and wants to get the widest possible input from YOU. If you know a vet, reservist or active-duty service member who makes a positive impact in OC please submit this short nomination form: tinyurl.com/KFVOTY.
Second, I want to mark another important milestone in a fight that the Supervisor has done much to win: this week Governor Newsom signed a bill authorizing will allow the county to start spending the $20 million the County Board of Supervisors have allocated for an Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Gypsum Canyon. The bill, coauthored by OC State Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva and OC State Senator Tom Umberg, is the most concrete step yet towards giving our heroes what they deserve!
Finally, I want to say–as a Surfer, long time Surfrider Foundation activist and resident of a low-lying coastal city–how much I enjoyed the Sustainability Summit and how proud I am of all the work that our office is doing to mitigate the climate crisis and, especially, its coastal aspects.

As of September 30, 2022 there are 241 total cases of Monkeypox and 14 (6%) hospitalizations in Orange County. Testing is available across the County. According to Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong from Orange County Health Care Agency, the virus is plateauing, and vaccination demand is lowered. People are behaving less risky, and thus there is a change in guidelines for who gets the vaccine. To register for the vaccine, eligible individuals can visit Othena.com.

OC Health Update
Here is the latest from OC Health to keep in mind this week:
Walk to School Day: Walk to School Day is coming up on October 5! The OC Health Care Agency encourages all drivers and motorists to stay alert and vigilant about driving safely in school zones and asks residents to take the Go Human Safety Pledge to keep our students safe.
Ducks Partnership: The OC Health Care Agency (HCA) is partnering with the Anaheim Ducks National Hockey League (NHL) Club in its first ever multi-year partnership to promote mental health awareness. To urgently respond to the mental health crisis here in Orange County, we must prioritize removing the stigma around mental health and seeking help. We must remove the stigma to talk about dying, cancer, grief, depression, and our emotions. To help, we want to empower our diverse community of Orange County residents to take advantage of the wide range of mental health resources the county offers.
It is increasingly important to remain safe and healthy and it is a top priority of mine to keep community members updated with the most recent guidelines. To find more information on the latest guidelines issued by the HCA, visit occovid19.ochealthinfo.com.

COVID-19 Data
As of September 29, 2022, 2,351,742 Orange County residents are fully vaccinated, 209,127 are partially vaccinated and 1,379,047 received their shot or booster dose. The 7-day average positivity rate in our County is 6.1%. This equals out to 7.4 daily positive COVID cases per 100k residents.
OC Animal Care:
Many concerned citizens reached out to my office about the state of OC Animal Care’s adoption system. In response, I sent an anonymous staffer unannounced to walk in to the shelter and report back what an everyday resident may experience as a walk in adopter. I’m pleased to report they were accommodated within minutes and were able to view multiple animals (& our office almost got a new fuzzy team member)!
There are some fundamental truths we must start with:
-
Too many pets are living in our shelters who need a loving home.
-
Our shelters are understaffed and we must vigorously recruit and retain new staff members.
-
The OCAC shelter is open for walk ins. Appointments are recommended for a quicker adoption process, but not necessary. Every customer receives a fully personalized adoption experience.
To solve our most pressing concerns, my office sponsored adoptions through the month of September to find loving homes for over 300 pets. I hope you will join our mission to clear our overcrowded shelters and add a new member to your family. To read my official response to frequently asked questions, please click here.
Pet of the Week

Back in April, Maple was found wandering around, lost and alone, when a good Samaritan brought him to OC Animal Care for help. Since his arrival, we’ve learned that Maple may come across as shy, but he opens right up to show you his sweet personality once he gets to know you! This handsome, 2-year-old, German Shepherd mix has so much love to give, and it’s always evident in his happy grin! Maple is a strong pup, but he’s been working on his leash manners during his walks! Maple has met a couple of other dogs while in our care and has done great around them! He may do well with a doggie sibling that can match his bouncy style of play. Maple is a big boy who is full of love and enjoys nothing more than spending time with those he’s built a bond with.
Interested in adopting Maple? Call (714) 935-6848 to schedule an adoption appointment today! Walk-ins are welcome! *

Mariangeles Soto-Diaz: Gentle Prowess Deliberations – October 1
Performance: 8pm, Saturday October 1st, 2022
Part of Mariangeles Soto-Diaz’s ongoing artist residency, Gentle Prowess Deliberations is the third project in a series in which the artist incorporate judo principles and elements into art objects, installations, performances and social practice with her judo community. This project focuses on ju, or gentle, one of the core concepts of judo. The work also grapples with the ongoing reality of violence, including the violence that has led to over six million people leaving the artists native country of Venezuela in recent years. How does one practice ju in a world shaped by oppressive violence?
While growing up in Venezuela, Soto-Diaz’s judo teachers were intent on transmitting judo’s international sensibility as intertwined with its pacifist ethos, a key principle articulated by judo founder Jigoro Kano. Through these early experiences, Mariangeles was able to begin the philosophical and rhetorical quest into what this might mean as one confronts a powerful opponent, institution, or system.
For this project the artist approaches ju in several ways. She asked judo colleagues and teachers from two different dojos, Bunasawakai and Sawtelle, to characterize ju in their own words, and then incorporated their answers into aspects of the performance and installation. She weaves into the performance movements from a choreographed judo form that centers around ju, called ju-no-kata, performed here by US National champions Lee Pasteris and Frederick Dagdagan. Soto-Diaz incorporates judo movements performed by two of her sensei, grand master Sensei Nori Bunasawa and Sensei Goya. In addition to these four highly ranked master judokas, the artist is collaborating in the performance with dancer, choreographer and UCI professor Charlotte Griffin and art performer Christina Segovia. The evening will include field recordings from judo competitions at the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo as well as the US, with live and processed sound in collaboration with musician Michael Dessen.
