Dear Neighbor:
|
A Foundation for Future Generations
I began the week by honoring the fallen in service who sacrificed for our great country. Memorial Day is a time to strengthen and fortify our foundation for future generations. It is a time to reeducate ourselves and our children of our history, and recognize the ultimate sacrifices of heroes ... not only in death but during life, so that every succeeding generation will be worthy of those we honor on that day. The cost of forgetting is too great.
Our thoughts go out to families mourning their loved ones who died in service to our Country. I know that the contribution of these military men and women make America the land of the free and we can never take these sacrifices and lost lives for granted.

New Senior Housing
As our 2022 Point in Time Count demonstrates, there’s an unprecedented demand for senior housing in our County, with a 6% increase in homeless seniors over the age of 62. See more: Here
This week we broke ground on new low-income senior apartments in Huntington Beach, which will result in 44 units. This comes as the result of collaborative efforts and I will continue to work with cities, affordable housing developers, and community partners to leverage state and federal funds to build badly needed senior housing.

On Thursday, a senior community-member reached out to our office with her rent 6-months behind and battling depression from the fear of becoming homeless. We must do everything we can to help our elders and every resident in our County. Projects like this one will help.

Alex Rounaghi, Policy Advisor
Yesterday, I participated in a four hour meeting on juvenile justice in Orange County.
Supervisor Foley, Deputy CEO Lilly Simmering, Chief Deputy Probation Officer Daniel Hernandez, and Judge Craig Arthur kicked off the event with inspiring remarks about the importance of creating opportunities for all youth in Orange County to have the opportunity to live up to their potential.
The offsite location where the meeting was held included four working groups on relevant topics, including in-custody services, courts, prevention, and reentry. I participated in the reentry working group. We discussed strategies to improve access to community college, vocational training and workforce development through union partnerships, housing, and many other important components of our juvenile justice system.
Supervisor Foley and I look forward to the important work ahead to improve outcomes for youth in our juvenile justice system. Please contact us with your ideas or feedback: Alex.Rounaghi@ocgov.com

Memorial Day passed, but many Gold Star families continue to grieve the loss of a son or daughter during a far-off conflict. More than 1 million soldiers, sailors, coastguardsmen, airmen and Marines gave their lives to defend our Nation and I want to call special attention to a group of heroes to hold close to our hearts.
On Thursday August 26, 2021, a bombing outside the gates of the Kabul Airport killed 13 servicemembers. While they came from all over our great Nation, the sailor and eleven Marines were stationed at Camp Pendleton ... making them our neighbors. My thoughts are with them, their families, and loved ones. We may not have known them, but we owe them.
Please join me in remembering them and their heroism:
- Marine Corps Lance Cpl. David Espinoza, 20, of Rio Bravo, Tex.
- Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole Gee, 23, of Roseville, Calif.
- Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin Taylor Hoover, 31, of Utah
- Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss, 23, of Corryton, Tenn.
- Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22, of Indio, Calif.
- Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum, 20, Jackson, Wyo.
- Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, 20, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
- Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, 20, of Norco, Calif.
- Marine Corps Cpl. Daegan William-Tyeler Page, 23, of Omaha
- Marine Corps Sgt. Johanny Rosario, 25, Lawrence, Mass.
- Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto Sanchez, 22, Logansport, Ind.
- Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, 20, of Wentzville, Mo.
- Navy Hospital Corpsman Max Soviak, 22, of Berlin Heights, Ohio

I hope that you marked your calendars to attend Supervisor Foley’s first-ever Flag Day celebration and program on June 14, 2022. I’m currently working hard, behind the scenes, to plan for this event alongside our staff. One exciting feature is coordinating the attendance of our local Girl Scouts so that our youth can participate in this patriotic event and experience civic engagement.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve sat in on briefings on a range of topics presented by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department, John Wayne Airport, OC Community Resources, OC Public Works, and OC Waste & Recycling offices.

 Flower at OC Animal Care
Flower arrived at OC Animal Care in need of immediate medical attention. Based on Flower’s wounds, Verterinary staff recognized the cause of her injuries as being struck by a car. In addition to sustaining a head injury, Flower fractured 2 femurs and experienced other wounds. Staff rushed her into surgery and, while each wound was individually treated, Flower required much-needed time in the care of volunteer foster caretakers to rest, heal, and gain back her strength
We are excited to report that Flower’s recovery continued, making her ready to find her furr-ever family! Flower is as sweet as her name and loves all humans. She will nuzzle right into your hand in hopes of attention, while giving you the sweetest purr.
