Helping Our Communities Thrive - Click Here for Our City Report!
If you reside in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, Santa Ana, or Tustin, review our 2021 City Report to see what is in store for your city and how much our determined team has accomplished since I took office, last March. While I will continue to work with our coastal communities on long standing initiatives, it feels wonderful to bring our mission of transparency, support for cities, and action to more of our neighbors!
As I mentioned, I have been recovering after minor surgery due to sun damage and a lifetime spent enjoying the outdoors. I am a strong advocate of sun safety, so please wear sunscreen, a hat, and have regular preventative screenings. As I recover, I have been working remotely to make sure that our residents have access to the COVID-19 testing and vaccines that they need.
Also this week, our federal government launched a website for every household to sign up and receive 4 free rapid tests. Learn more in our "COVID Health Updates" below or get yours: Here
www.COVIDtests.gov
We are still in the midst of an Omicron surge and protecting our workers and the public through safe working conditions is essential. Read more about the 40 hours of COVID sick relief that we are offering for County staff: Here We need to develop operational systems that allow flexibility and secure access to telecommuting during future surge incidents. It is important that we respond to the concerns of employees that are wanting to keep themselves and their families safe.
A family friend that chose not to get vaccinated is fighting for his life. It’s difficult for me to know that so many of the dangers from this virus are preventable. I have also been devastated to learn about the increase in pediatric cases and hospital visits: Learn More
Please avoid indoor gatherings, wear a mask, and (I can’t stress this enough) get vaccinated and boosted.
Be well,
Katrina Foley Supervisor County of Orange

Doctors, Nurses Report Alarming Rise In Pediatric COVID-19 Cases
Source: "Doctors, Nurses Report Alarming Rise In Pediatric COVID-19 Cases" CBS Los Angeles, January 9, 2022
As reported by CBS Los Angeles, there are mounting numbers of children in Orange County hospitals. Our hearts go out to the families whose children are fighting for their lives from this terrible disease.
We've fought this pandemic with our families and neighbors in mind. As much as we wish this was the last surge, it won't be, Children 5 and up can now get vaccinated and it is important to get your children vaccinated immediately ... not only for their protection, but also to protect the elederly or immunocompromised.
"COVID is not going away. We must learn to adjust and respond to surges, while continuing to participate in school, work and life. The surge will end as dramatically as it began. Life will get better. We just need to manage it with reasonable precautions.” - Supervisor Katrina Foley
Is It Time to Upgrade Your Mask?
When choosing a face mask, make sure that it is made of fabric that blocks light when held up to a bright light source. The goal is a “well-fitted mask” that filters respiratory droplets that may contain COVID-19 viral particles.
Mask Guidance

Omicron is a highly transmissible variant that is circulating in our community. If you have access to a high filtration mask, such as an N95, wear it consistently and properly for the best protection.
You can find out more in our County of Orange COVID Press Briefing: Here
Vaccination Rates
In total, 2,372,444 Orange County residents are fully vaccinated, while 1,043,267 reisdents have received their booster shot or additonal vaccines. Check the rates in your city: Here

"Please do not try to get Omicron. I hear some people say that they want to intentionally expose themselves to the variant, but doing so can put you at risk of health complications, including ‘long COVID,’ and overload our hospitals & essential workers." - Supervisor Katrina Foley

While our Orange Coast College vaccine clinic was closed in honor of MLK Day, it was great to be back at our Thursday clinic. In one day, alone, nurses administered 249 vaccines and I passed out 305 saliva test kits.
We are still seeing an increase in the number of patients coming in for their vaccinations. However, now that the holidays are over and schools are open, we are seeing fewer children coming in to get vaccinated.
The O.C.C. vaccine clinic will continue to offer vaccines on Mondays from 8:30 - 4:30 p.m. and on Thursdays from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. While we replenish our supply of test kits, we encourage everyone to go to the federal site to receive their 4 free test kits: Covidtests.gov
The OC Health Agency and auxiliary staff work 6 days a week throughout the Omicron surge. The entire team of nurses, pharmacists, and other staff are incredibly friendly and professional, even with the extra workload. I dedicate this column to them!

A Groundbreaking Event!
So many accomplishments and so many to come!
Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending my first event in Santa Ana this year - the groundbreaking for the Giant River Otters and Primate Trails Habitat at the Santa Ana Zoo. We were joined by Mayor Sarmiento, members of the Santa Ana City Council, Congressman Lou Correa, the office of Assembly member Tom Day, and Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo.
The Exhibit will be half terrestrial and half aquatic and will assist in educating Orange County residents on the importance of preserving endangered wildlife. It will add depth to the zoo as a premier educational institution in our County. I’m excited to come back for the Grand Opening!
Apart from the City of Santa Ana, I also have the pleasure of serving the great city of Garden Grove. I am excited to learn and serve both cities. If you need assistance, please reach me directly at (714) 714-3122 or manuel.chavez@ocgov.com.

Pet of the Week: Charlie Animal ID: A1743920
Avalon is a beautiful 2-year-old Catahoula mix that is full of energy and ready to bounce right into your heart! Avalon loves any chance to explore the outdoors with her human friends and would make a wonderful hiking, running, or walking buddy! Avalon was found wandering the streets and, since arriving at our facility, we’ve fallen in love with her cheerful, spunky personality. She loves other pets and back scratches but she can also hop! For that reason, an owner with a high fence or completely indoor home may be the best fit for Ms. Avalon. If you're looking for a pup that is smart and cab sit beautifully on cue, Avalon is for you. We think she will do best with an active family who will find fun ways to get lots of great exercise!
Think Avalon would be a good fit for your family? Call (714) 935-6848 to set up an adoption appointment today! (Animal ID: A1743920)
