Sunday, January 18 marks a significant milestone in Orange County’s leadership in water sustainability: the 18th anniversary of the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) and the production of more than 500 billion gallons of purified water.
Recognized as the largest advanced water purification system of its kind in the world, the GWRS is a joint effort between the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San) and the Orange County Water District (OCWD). Together, these agencies deliver a reliable, drought-resilient water supply to more than one million residents in northwest and central Orange County.
Since beginning operations in 2008, the GWRS has played a critical role in safeguarding the region’s groundwater resources. By purifying highly treated wastewater to near-distilled quality and replenishing the Orange County Groundwater Basin, the facility reduces dependence on imported water, enhances climate resilience, and supports long-term regional water security.
As Orange County continues to grow, the GWRS stands as a global model for innovative water reuse and interagency collaboration. Celebrating 18 years of operation and 500 billion gallons of purified water is more than just a milestone; it is a testament to forward-thinking leadership and a shared commitment to securing a sustainable water future for generations to come.
