January marks 17 years since the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), the world's largest water purification system for indirect potable reuse obtained approval to send water to the recharge basins in Anaheim.
The joint project between the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San) and the Orange County Water District (OCWD) started by producing 70 million gallons of water a day (MGD). Today, GWRS produces 130 MGD, which is enough water for 1 million people in Orange County. This effort has also allowed OC San to recycle 100 percent of reclaimable flows. Making this amazing project come to life is a success for Orange County and the water industry!
