In the middle of an ongoing election, the Trump Administration sent California election officials a list of more than 20,000 individuals it claims are "likely" noncitizens and demanded their ballots be set aside. The Administration gave no explanation of how it compiled the list. When California asked for the evidence behind it, the Administration refused to provide it and quickly sued to stop these ballots from being counted.
At best, this lawsuit is a reckless political stunt. At worst, it threatens to disenfranchise thousands of Californians this election.
Right now, my office is fighting this baseless lawsuit in court. I am committed to protecting accurate, fair, reliable, and secure elections for Californians and to defending your fundamental right to vote, the right from which all other rights flow. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, and I encourage everyone who has not voted yet to cast their ballot early. Your vote is your voice, make sure it is heard.
Your Attorney General, Rob

Fighting Back Against Crypto Conmen
Cryptocurrency fraud has rapidly become the nation's costliest cybercrime, with syndicates now weaponizing generative AI, deepfakes, and malicious smart contracts to drain digital wallets in minutes. In response, my office released information to protect Californians from falling prey to scammers and new resources to get your hard-earned money back if you are a victim. These are the same age-old scams we've always fought, but with the rise of widespread access to cryptocurrency, predators have found an insidious new means to take your money. These fraudsters aren't just targeting elders — we’re seeing a sharp rise in reports of Gen Z being preyed upon on platforms like Twitch, TikTok, and Instagram. I strongly urge all Californians to protect themselves and their loved ones: stay informed, guard yourself with knowledge, never use a Cryptocurrency ATM, and report it if you have been scammed.

Securing Settlement with 23andMe
23andMe collected genetic data about millions of people and failed to meet its obligation to keep that information safe. We took them to court and secured a $6 million settlement with Chrome Holding Co., formerly known as 23andMe. The settlement, which is pending court approval, resolves allegations that the company's failure to protect its customers’ personal information and genetic data resulted in a 2023 data breach. Companies cannot evade California’s consumer protection and privacy laws by filing for bankruptcy. I am proud to fight for the privacy rights of Californians and to deliver this settlement for consumers who put their trust in 23andMe. I want to remind Californians that customers of 23andMe can delete their private, genetic data — no matter who owns it.

Holding the Trump Administration Accountable
Once again, the courts have rejected the Trump Administration’s attempts to circumvent the law for its own political agenda. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld a lower court’s order blocking the Trump Administration’s federalization and deployment of California National Guard troops in and around Los Angeles. Deploying the National Guard with no rhyme or reason was a clear example of federal overreach, and it will not be tolerated. When the President tramples on the Constitution and the rights of Californians, we’ll fight to hold him accountable — and we will win.

Protecting Survivors of Sexual Assault on College Campuses
There has been widespread public outcry and a national re-examination of campus safety procedures in the wake of severe institutional failures alleged in the Jane Doe v. Cornell University litigation. In response, my office issued an updated guidance letter to colleges and universities, local law enforcement agencies, and campus security personnel across California, reaffirming the state’s protections against campus sexual assault and sexual harassment. This is a moment of reckoning for how our society responds to sexual assault and for how campuses ensure a culture where accountability and dignity are the norm. For too long, survivors have been asked to bear the burden of speaking out while the institutions responsible for protecting them have fallen short. Every student deserves to learn in an environment where their safety is the top priority. My office will continue to support survivors, hold perpetrators of sexual violence accountable, and work with educational institutions to ensure that all students can safely access educational opportunities without fear of sexual assault.

Making Your Life Affordable
Making Your Life Affordable: From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
What We Did: This week, my office sued to block the merger of PlayPower and Burke, two of the top five largest national suppliers of commercial outdoor playground equipment. Our lawsuit alleges the proposed merger would result in less competition in the market of commercial outdoor playground equipment and could lead to higher prices and lower quality.
What This Means to You: The joys of life are getting harder to afford. Millions of American children look forward to having some fun by visiting their local playgrounds and the illegal merger of PlayPower and Burke — both owned by private equity firms based in California — threatens to lower quality and increase prices for California schools and local parks and recreation departments that provide access to this experience for kids. Purchases of commercial outdoor playground equipment are mostly funded through government and taxpayer dollars, meaning most of the cost of price increases, including those due to reduced competition, falls squarely on the public. My office remains committed to going after illegal corporate consolidation raising the cost of living for Californians.

Keeping You Safe
When firearms fall into the wrong hands, they put our communities at risk. This week, we announced the arrest of two people following a multi-agency operation that resulted in the seizure of six firearms, ammunition, and narcotics at a residence in Tulare County. Together with our local and federal law enforcement partners, we seized three rifles, two shotguns, one pistol, 99 rounds of ammunition, 24 grams of methamphetamine, and three digital scales. Among the firearms recovered was a pistol reported stolen in 2023 from Visalia. DOJ will continue working with agencies across the state to prevent gun violence and protect Californians.

CARE Corner
Albert Lord, CARE Community Outreach Manager for the LA and OC Regions, attended the LA Chapter Urban League Guild’s Know Your Voting Rights Membership meeting. The Urban League Guilds are volunteer auxiliaries of the National Urban League. Unfortunately, voters of color can still face discriminatory barriers to equal participation in our democracy, especially at the local level.
In addition, the CARE community virtual briefings continue for the SB 54 Updated Guidance and Model Policies for California’s Public Institutions.

Post of the Week
Felony charges have been filed against 103 In-Home Supportive Services providers for allegedly defrauding the Medi-Cal program out of over $4.5 million dollars.
While the alleged fraud represents a small fraction of California’s $30 billion IHSS budget, any abuse of Medi-Cal jeopardizes funding for our most vulnerable residents. This statewide enforcement effort ensures the integrity of the IHSS program so that every individual who genuinely needs care receives it.
