We just wrapped up an incredibly busy and exciting week at California DOJ. Here are the quick highlights:
📱 We landed a historic $17 billion settlement with Meta, making Instagram and Facebook safer for young people.
🗳️ We blocked the Trump Administration’s latest attempt to interfere in our elections and curtail mail-in voting.
💡 We sued the Trump Administration for trying to halt wind energy development off our coast.
🩺 We sued the Trump Administration to protect family planning services and reproductive healthcare.
Our docket was full, as it should be. It is an honor to have the opportunity to protect, serve, and defend Californians across such a large swath of critical issues. As we head into a new week, you can be sure that our batteries are fully charged, and we are ready to continue this important work.

Securing a Win for California Children Against Social Media Addiction
 We have secured a settlement with Meta that will make social media less dangerous for our kids and make a world of a difference for children and their families. Meta has agreed to make massive transformations that will reduce the risk of harm from its platforms — and will do it within months. We are talking about time limits, stopping notifications during school, a block on the app during critical overnight hours, bans on plastic surgery filters, and so much more — real enforceable protections for children on Facebook and Instagram. The proposed settlement also includes a monetary payment of up to $17 billion to the states over ten years — California alone will receive $1.5 billion to $2.1 billion. This settlement resolves our 2023 lawsuit that alleged Meta illegally collected and used the data of children under the age of 13 who used its platforms, made decisions in designing its platforms that drove excessive use and put young users at risk, and that it lied to users, their families, and the public about the safety of Facebook and Instagram. In doing so, it violated federal and state laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, California's False Advertising Law, and California’s Unfair Competition Law.

A Win Protecting Fair Elections
From the beginning, it’s been clear that President Trump doesn’t understand how elections work. He’s repeatedly broken the law, so we’ve repeatedly taken him to court. On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an order on the emergency docket stating we brought our lawsuit challenging the President's second elections-related Executive Order too early, without addressing the merits of our case. Just two days later, consistent with that order, we sued to stop the final USPS rule that would require state and local election officials to redesign and reprint their ballot envelopes, enroll millions of voters with USPS, and direct USPS to reject ballot mailings that do not meet these requirements, as directed by President Trump’s second elections EO. The very next day, the district court blocked key parts of the rule, making it clear that President Trump must keep his hands off our elections. The right to vote is a foundational principle of our democracy, and we’re making sure it remains protected for everyone.

Upholding Public Safety in California Communities
 I am incredibly proud of our special agents who are out in the field, boots on the ground, and risking their lives daily. We have been busy putting traffickers behind bars, standing with survivors, taking deadly fentanyl off our streets, and removing illegal firearms from the hands of people who should not have them. Despite significant reductions in federal public safety funding and rollbacks of commonsense public safety policies under the Trump Administration, we remain focused on partnering with law enforcement agencies, supporting victims and survivors, disrupting criminal networks, and enforcing California’s public safety laws.
In the past five years:

Approximately 1,167 human-trafficking-related arrests have been made, including arrests of sex buyers and traffickers.

Approximately 1,196 victims have been rescued, offered assistance, or supported.
-
17,871,765 fentanyl pills have been seized.
-
7,220 pounds of fentanyl powder have been seized.
-
626 fentanyl-related arrests have been made.
-
10,210 firearms have been seized, including:
-
5,390 firearms identified through the Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS); and
-
4,820 non-APPS firearms including ghost guns, assault weapons, and machine guns.
-
DOJ’s Bureau of Forensic Services provided scientific analysis for 196,864 requests.

1,290 illegal cannabis arrests have been made.
-
4,644,550 illegally cultivated cannabis plants were seized.
These numbers represent more than arrests and seizures — they represent lives saved, families kept safe, and communities protected. We will continue to use every tool at our disposal to protect Californians and hold those who threaten our communities accountable.

Ensuring Californians' Access to Reliable, Clean Energy
 The Trump Administration’s backroom illegal buyout deal with Golden State Wind to stop offshore wind development in favor of gas and oil drilling is just another way for the Trump Administration to line the pockets of its Big Oil donors. That is why, together with the California Energy Commission, we filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration and Golden State Wind LLC over the Administration’s unlawful buyout of Golden State Wind’s offshore wind energy lease. The lease buyout jeopardizes thousands of high-quality jobs and the State’s investments in the offshore wind industry, including from voter-approved climate bonds. The canceled projects also threaten to set back California’s burgeoning offshore wind industry by years. Under the agreement, the U.S. Department of the Interior illegally reallocated $120 million in federal taxpayer dollars to pay Golden State Wind to abandon its offshore wind energy lease in federal waters off of California’s Central Coast and requires Golden State Wind to invest an equal amount in out-of-state fossil-fuel projects that will do nothing to support California’s energy economy. Let’s be clear: California will continue to aggressively fight back against the Trump administration's outrageous abuse of taxpayer dollars to abandon offshore wind investments that could have delivered union-paying jobs and reliable clean energy to Californians.

California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Did You Know: That mysterious $7.99 appearing on your credit card bill every month just got easier to identify — and cancel. Both consumers and businesses should remember that California’s Automatic Renewal Law gives consumers important rights when it comes to the renewal of subscription-based services.
What This Means to You: According to a 2025 survey, consumers pay on average $17 per month for subscriptions they don’t use, costing over $200 per year. This adds up! Under California’s Automatic Renewal Law businesses must get explicit consent before charging consumers and must give consumers a clear and straightforward method for cancelling unwanted subscriptions. With the increasing number of online businesses offering subscriptions, it is important to ensure that businesses are acting transparently and that consumers have the power to manage and cancel these subscriptions more easily.

Keeping You Safe
California is taking action to make our communities safer and this week a court reaffirmed our constitutional authority to do so. This week, my office announced a victory in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld California’s law requiring federally licensed firearm dealers to maintain video and audio recording systems at their businesses. The Ninth Circuit’s ruling affirmed the dismissal of a lawsuit challenging California Penal Code section 26806, rejecting claims that the law violates the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments. Commonsense safety measures — like mandatory security camera and recording systems at gun stores — can help support law enforcement investigations and prevent crime. My office will continue defending California’s gun safety laws against challenges designed to undermine our ability to protect Californians.
