While President Trump and his Administration try to politicize “fraud” and gaslight the American public, the truth is California DOJ has been on the ground, in our communities, fighting fraud and going after bad actors who target our public programs for years.
This isn’t a political game for us. This is about protecting taxpayer money, prosecuting criminals who steal from our state, and returning stolen dollars to our communities. I have one message for anyone who sees our public programs as their piggy banks: we’re coming for you.

Ghost Gun Crackdown
My office, together with San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, announced a trailblazing lawsuit against Gatalog Foundation Inc. and CTRLPew LLC for unlawfully distributing computer code for 3D printing ghost guns, machine gun conversion devices including "Glock Switches," illegal large-capacity magazines, and other firearm-related products and components to individuals who are not licensed to manufacture firearms in California. The defendants are being held accountable for promoting and facilitating the unlawful manufacture of 3D printed firearms and machine guns. This groundbreaking lawsuit shows that our office is not bound by the old playbook. Similar to these defendants, we think creatively, but our aim is to protect public safety rather than undermine it. I’m committed to continuing to protect Californians from an industry that skirts the law to arm people who never passed a background check with weapons designed to end life.

Fighting for School Funding
President Trump has once again admitted defeat. The Trump Administration tried to use vital funding for our schools and our children as leverage to impose its misguided, insidious culture war agenda — and it lost, decisively. In a complete and final victory, my office announced an agreement permanently blocking the U.S. Department of Education’s efforts to impose illegal conditions on $4.9 billion in federal education funding to California. In April 2025, the U.S. Department of Education informed state and local agencies that they must accept the Trump Administration’s new and legally incoherent interpretation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts — or else risk immediate and catastrophic loss of federal education funds. California, like many other states, refused to certify its compliance with these new requirements, explaining that there is no lawful or practical way to do so given the Department’s vague, contradictory, and unsupported interpretation of Title VI. Let me be clear: This was never about fighting discrimination; it was about bullying states like California into abandoning lawful diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Protecting Over $10 Billion in Child Care and Family Assistance Funding
We secured a court order that continues blocking the Trump Administration’s illegal attempt to freeze over $10 billion in federal funding for childcare and family assistance programs. Last month, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services imposed a funding freeze exclusively on five Democratic-led states — California, New York, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota — on the sole basis of unsupported claims of “serious concerns about widespread fraud and misuse of taxpayer dollars.” We are pleased that the court has once again sided with us. The Trump Administration’s actions are not only unlawful — they are cruel, targeting the most vulnerable among us. My fellow attorneys general and I will not relent in this case, and we are confident that we will ultimately prevail in permanently blocking the unlawful funding freeze.

Defending Fuel Economy Standards
This week, I joined a coalition of 21 attorneys general, four cities, and one county, in submitting a comment letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opposing its proposal to weaken corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for passenger cars and light trucks. Historically, NHTSA’s standards have reduced consumer costs by improving fuel efficiency for vehicles and decreasing gasoline demand. However, the new proposed rule would significantly weaken fuel economy standards. Robust fuel economy standards are necessary to save drivers money and protect the environment, but NHTSA would rather weaken fuel economy standards. We are at a critical juncture in protecting our people and the environment, and that’s why I urge this Administration to course-correct and maintain the strong standards NHTSA previously put in place.

Making Your Life Affordable

Making Your Life Affordable: From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Hot Tip: Check your credit report regularly and you may save some cash.
What This Means to You: Your credit score affects whether you can rent a house or apartment, get a job, or insurance, get a loan, credit card, as well as what interest rate and other terms you'll get. Because your credit score is based on your credit reports, it is important to check your credit reports regularly and tell the credit-reporting companies if any information is wrong — this can also help identify errors and illegal activity, like identity theft. Consumers are entitled to one free credit report a year from each of the three national credit bureaus. Sound daunting? For an easy way to remember, keep reading our Sunday newsletter and we'll remind you throughout the year!

Keeping You Safe
This week, my office announced the arrests of and filing of multiple felony charges against seven individuals for hospice fraud in Monterey County. Among the individuals arrested was the owner of Compassionate Touch Hospice and Spiritual Touch Hospice, two co-owners of Fountain Hospice, three doctors, and one nurse.
My Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse led a multi-year investigation that revealed a sophisticated conspiracy to defraud Medi-Cal and Medicare and involved the owners, doctors and nurses of Spiritual Touch Hospice, Compassionate Touch Hospice, and Fountain Hospice. The defendants owned, operated, or worked for the three hospice companies simultaneously and recruited, enrolled, and certified patients for hospice services who did not suffer from a terminal diagnosis. Some of these patients did not know hospice was intended for patients who were terminally ill, or that they were even enrolled in hospice. To avoid suspicion, the defendants transferred several patients between the three companies after six months and continued fraudulently billing for hospice services. Abusing systems meant to support Californians and putting profits before people and their families won’t be tolerated — and it won’t fly under the radar. To those committing fraud: We’re watching, we’re investigating, and we’ll act.

Post of the Week
The U.S Supreme Court denied California Republicans’ appeal in our case defending Prop 50. This is good news not only for Californians, but for our democracy. With this latest win, California’s newly redistricted congressional maps will be allowed to go into effect.
