A new federal law stripping Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood health centers will prevent patients from receiving essential medical services, such as cancer screenings, vaccines, wellness exams, STI testing, and contraception.
This is not about abortion; this is about punishing Planned Parenthood for advocating for reproductive rights.
For many families across the nation, Planned Parenthood is their only source of healthcare. Cutting Medicaid from these health centers burdens already-strained healthcare systems and endangers people’s lives—particularly rural and lower-income patients who rely on Medicaid and Planned Parenthood for healthcare. This week, I went to court to challenge the federal administration’s attempt to defund Planned Parenthood and defend access to healthcare. Access to healthcare is a fundamental right, not a political bargaining chip.
Respectfully,
Rob

Restoring Education Funding
The U.S. Department of Education has released previously withheld education funding to California. My office co-led a coalition in filing a lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s abrupt and unlawful decision to freeze this funding last month. Let’s be clear: This funding should never have been frozen in the first place – that’s why we filed our lawsuit. We’re glad to see the Administration back down from its illegal effort to withhold these funds, but we can’t lose sight of the long-term damage caused by the President’s campaign of chaos and uncertainty. California will not stop fighting to hold the President and his Administration accountable to the law and to protect our children’s educational future.

Protecting Personal Data of SNAP Recipients
This week, I led a coalition of 21 attorneys general in a lawsuit challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s demand that states turn over personal and sensitive information about millions of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients. SNAP is a federally-funded, state-administered program that provides billions of dollars in food assistance to tens of millions of low-income families across the country. SNAP applicants provide their private information on the understanding, backed by long-standing state and federal laws, that their information will not be used for unrelated purposes. In the lawsuit, we argue that this demand violates multiple federal privacy laws and the U.S. Constitution. While the President may be comfortable breaking promises to the American people, California is not. We will not comply with this illegal demand.

Consumer Alert: Scams Targeting the Military Community
In recognition of Military Consumer Month, my office issued a consumer alert to help protect California service members, veterans, and their family members from targeted common scams and fraud. Military service members, veterans, and their families are frequently targeted by scammers who want access to their pay and benefits, and who know that military members will often pay even fraudulent or over-stated debts to avoid security clearance issues or other disruptions to their military careers. In addition, the camaraderie that unites the military community is often exploited by impostors who claim to be veterans in attempts to perpetrate scams or access personal information for fraudulent purposes. Scammers use a variety of tactics to gain trust. Protect yourself by staying up to date on common military- and veteran-targeted scams.

Trump’s Unlawful Attacks on Gender-Affirming Care
The President and his Administration’s relentless attacks on gender-affirming care endanger already vulnerable adolescents whose health and well-being are at risk. I filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration's efforts to restrict access to healthcare for transgender, intersex, and nonbinary youth. The lawsuit targets recent federal actions — including President Trump’s Executive Order 14187 and its implementing memoranda from the U.S. Department of Justice — targeting the provision of medically necessary gender-affirming care for individuals under the age of 19, even in states like California where such care is legal and protected. These actions have created a chilling effect in which providers are pressured to scale back on their care for fear of prosecution, leaving countless individuals without the critical care they need and are entitled to under law.

Keeping You Safe: Combating Gun Violence
We all have a part to play in combating America's gun violence epidemic. At the California Department of Justice, we are using all the tools in our toolbox to protect the public from gun violence — from our law enforcement efforts, to community partnerships and public education, to our work defending California's commonsense gun laws in court. As part of these efforts, in 2022, DOJ launched the Office of Gun Violence Prevention (OGVP). OGVP is dedicated to developing strategies and working with stakeholders to address the gun violence epidemic, and is the first such office in the nation established within an attorney general’s office. OGVP has published four data and policy reports to educate the public on combating the ghost gun crisis, the impact of gun violence in California, the intersection of domestic violence and firearms, and utilizing California’s nine court protection order processes to prevent gun violence.
OGVP has also worked to strengthen Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs, hosting a series of gun violence prevention roundtables around the state with hundreds of CVI leaders to recognize and uplift these programs’ enormous successes in reducing gun violence across our state. Their work is critically important. Until August 18, 2025, community-based organizations and city, county, or tribal agencies can apply for grant funding through the California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) grant program to support CVI initiatives that work to break cycles of violence and provide victims with the support they need.

Making Life Affordable: Pharmacy Benefit Managers
Making Your Life Affordable: From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Case Studies: Going after companies that intentionally overcharge patients for lifesaving medicine.
What We Are Doing: In 2023, my office filed a lawsuit against the nation's largest insulin makers — Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi — and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) CVS Caremark, Express Scripts, and OptumRx for purposefully driving up the cost of insulin at the expense of vulnerable patients. This year, we continued our fight to protect consumers by urging Congressional leaders to pass a law to bar PBMs from owning or operating pharmacies to increase competition and reduce drug prices.
What this Means to You: Drug prices have skyrocketed in recent years, and our insulin lawsuit argues this was intentional — and illegal. In the U.S., insulin is so expensive that many diabetics struggle to afford their medication even when it is covered by health plans. Many patients are forced to ration insulin — sometimes with deadly consequences. In fact, a 2021 report shockingly found that insulin costs roughly ten times more within the United States than outside it. More than 3 million adults in California — over 10% of the state’s adult population — have been diagnosed with diabetes. I am absolutely committed to using the full force of my office to go after illegal actions by corporations looking to enrich themselves and their shareholders at the expense of vulnerable Americans.
