Without notice or consent, the Trump Administration shared millions of Medicaid enrollees’ private health information with the Department of Homeland Security, which houses Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Trump is weaponizing Medicaid and injecting fear into healthcare and public services.
This is not about going after waste or fraud; it is about targeting vulnerable people who entrusted their government to help them access healthcare — a basic human right. Trump violated our privacy, sowed widespread distrust, put the health and wellbeing of millions at risk, and broke the law. This week, I filed our 29th lawsuit against the President and his Administration to hold them accountable for this unlawful and unconscionable decision that will have a disastrous impact on public health. As Attorney General, I will always stand up for the privacy and rights of all who call the Golden State home.
In solidarity,
Rob

Protecting School Mental Health Programs
This week, my office joined a coalition of 16 states, in suing the Trump Administration’s Department of Education over their unlawful decision to discontinue grants awarded through Congressionally-established school mental health funding programs, including roughly $200 million awarded to local education agencies, county offices of education, and universities in California. These mental health programs were established by Congress following a wave of tragic and unacceptable school shootings, and they do critical work to ensure students can not only succeed but thrive. The California Department of Justice will not stand idly by – we’re once again taking the Trump Administration to court, this time to protect the mental health and well-being of our students.

2025 State of Pride Report
To close out Pride Month, my office issued a new “State of Pride Report” highlighting the California Department of Justice’s recent actions to support, uplift, and defend the rights of LGBTQ+ communities across California and beyond. Despite the immense progress that the LGBTQ+ community has achieved, individuals continue to face deeply rooted and emerging challenges across the nation. Amidst a rise in attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, DOJ remains steadfast in its commitment to fight alongside LGBTQ+ communities in pursuit of justice and equality.

Fighting for Federal Employees
We secured a preliminary injunction in California’s lawsuit challenging the unlawful mass firing of employees and dismantling of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The decision immediately blocks the Trump Administration from implementing or enforcing its planned Reductions in Force or sub-agency restructuring with respect to: (1) the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (2) the Center for Tobacco Products, (3) the Office of Head Start and Head Start employees in the Regional Offices, and (4) the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, while litigation in this case continues. The work of HHS is absolutely critical to the safety and health of millions of Americans. We are pleased the court temporarily halted the Trump Administration’s unlawful dismantling of the agency.

Keeping You Safe: Cracking Cold Cases
This week, the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Forensic Services in the Division of Law Enforcement assisted in a collaborative multijurisdictional investigation alongside federal, state, and local partners that resulted in a suspect being arrested for a series of sexual assaults throughout Fresno County. These cold cases were cracked with the assistance of DNA evidence linking the suspect to a series of crimes spanning back to 2016. The Bureau of Forensic Services is the forensic science arm of the California Department of Justice. Its dedicated forensic scientists and award-winning laboratory system serve as a powerful resource for law enforcement agencies throughout California in solving crimes, identifying missing persons, cracking cold cases, bringing perpetrators to justice — and, ultimately, in protecting people’s lives.

Making Your Life Afforable
From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Case Study: Our lawsuit against notorious California landlord, Mike Nijjar and his companies.
What We Did: In the past few years, my office has worked to hold landlords accountable for violating California laws in Bakersfield, Marysville, and across California. As part of this effort, last month, we sued a group of property management and real estate holding companies owned by Mike Nijjar and members of his family. The Nijjar family and their companies own and manage over 22,000 rental housing units statewide, better known as: I E Rental Homes, Bridge Management, Equity Management, Golden Management, Hightower Management, Legacy Management, Mobile Management, Pro Management, and Regency Management. Our lawsuit alleges Nijjar’s companies egregiously violated numerous California laws by overcharging some tenants for rent, subjecting tenants to unsafe units, discriminating against applicants with Section 8 housing vouchers, among other allegations.
You Can Help: Anyone – including current or former tenants – who has information that might be relevant to this case are encouraged to share their stories with our office by going to oag.ca.gov/report.
What this Means to You: Every day, millions of Californians worry about keeping a roof over their head and when landlords fail to follow California law, and illegally raise rents, it makes it more difficult for people to do so. As a tenant, knowing your rights is critical. Under California law, residential tenants are protected from certain rent increases and may be protected from certain types of evictions. Keeping people housed is a top priority for my office and I am committed to protecting tenants and ensuring that all Californians have a place to call home.
