I was in Fresno on Friday to announce a multiagency law enforcement operation that successfully targeted and dismantled a violent criminal street gang in the Central Valley. As a result the operation, we arrested 89 individuals on felony charges; seized illegal drugs and firearms; and prevented nine violent crimes in the works.
This operation is an example of the good law enforcement work that’s possible when local, state, and federal partners team up to keep our communities safe. I’m proud California DOJ was part of the effort.
Central Valley families can go about their lives and sleep a little easier knowing that dangerous weapons, guns, and people are off their streets. We are not just arresting individuals — we are disrupting entire criminal operations, preventing future crime, and making it clear that California will not tolerate criminal gangs. The fight against organized crime requires constant vigilance, collaboration, and a united front of law enforcement partners dedicated to putting public safety first. As California’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer, that is something I will always deliver on.
With gratitude,
Rob

Fighting to Keep Federal Funding
This week, I sued the Trump Administration over its improper use of a single subclause buried in federal regulations to terminate tens of billions of dollars in grant funding to the states. Since taking office, the Trump Administration has engaged in a nationwide slash-and-burn campaign, unlawfully terminating tens of billions of dollars in critical federal funding appropriated by Congress. This hack job has been done under the flimsy premise of ‘changed agency priorities’ — even when this funding has been previously appropriated by Congress and awarded to the states. For federal funding to work, the states that receive that funding need to be able to plan ahead, make investments, and be confident that this funding will not be terminated on a whim.

Protecting Our Immigrant Communities
My office issued guidance to help California's immigrant communities avoid immigration scams by those seeking to take advantage of fear and uncertainty resulting from President Trump’s cruel mass detention and deportation campaign. The alert provides tools for people looking to hire free or low-cost legal help and for those looking to locate loved ones who are detained. Before hiring someone claiming to offer help with immigration matters or assistance locating a detained loved one, I urge people to familiarize themselves with existing resources that are often available at little or no cost and learn how to check that the individual is qualified to provide immigration help.
If You Are the Victim of an Immigration Scam:
Report it to the California Department of Justice at oag.ca.gov/report. You can also contact your local District Attorney or county department of consumer affairs.
For more do’s and dont's, see the full “Protecting Yourself from Immigration Scams” consumer alert on DOJ’s website in both English and Spanish.

Upholding Preventive Care Protections
The U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision to fully restore the Affordable Care Act’s preventive care mandate. The mandate requires private insurers to cover certain preventive services, such as cardiovascular disease intervention, lung, breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening, and dental and vision screening for infants and children, at no cost to consumers. Preventive care saves lives and lowers healthcare costs, and this decision keeps that care within reach for all Americans. While this decision preserves preventive care, we must and will remain vigilant in defending Californians against attacks on these important services.

Keeping You Safe: Hate Crimes Report
This week, my office released the 2024 Hate Crime in California Report and highlighted information and resources to support ongoing efforts across the state to combat hate. Reported hate crime events in California have increased by 2.7% from 1,970 in 2023 to 2,023 in 2024. In particular, reported hate crimes against our LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities have increased, and too many communities continue to be unacceptably targeted by hate.
If you believe you or someone you know has been the victim of a hate crime, notify local law enforcement and consider taking the following steps:
- If you are in immediate danger, call 911 and if needed, seek medical attention.
- Write down the exact words that were used and take note of any other relevant facts.
- If safe to do so, save all evidence and take photos.
- Get contact information for other victims and witnesses.
- Reach out to community organizations in your area that deal with hate crimes or incidents.
DOJ's Office of Community Awareness, Response, and Engagement will host a virtual Community Briefing on Wednesday, July 30th at 1pm PT to share highlights and findings from the report.

Making Your Life Affordable

From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Case Study: Our lawsuits to block unlawful mergers in the airline industry.
What We Did: In the past few years, my office has successfully blocked both the $3.8 billion merger between JetBlue and Spirit as well as an attempt by American Airlines and JetBlue to merge their operations and share profits — actions that were expected to cost consumers millions of dollars.
What This Means to You: Millions of Californians depend on the airline industry to travel quickly, efficiently, and safely within the United States and around the world. Put simply, when airline behemoths merge and eliminate competition this means fewer seats, more expensive tickets, and lower quality service for travelers — this is inexcusable. California DOJ along with federal partners got to work and successfully blocked both attempts — and we remain committed to standing up for Californians when companies attempt to form unlawful agreements to increase their profits at the expense consumers.
