I had the opportunity to join four of my fellow Attorneys General for a townhall this week on the real impacts Trump’s unlawful policies are having on everyday people and our communities.
We heard from an impressive 9-year-old boy who talked about the role Head Start had on his life, and how his family relies on Social Security and Medicaid to get by every day.
We heard from a union leader who is fighting for the safety, health, and well-being of first responders, including those who ran to the scene on 9/11.
We heard from a U.S. Navy veteran who is deeply concerned about the future of critical direct care services and support that veterans with disabilities rely on for daily living.
We heard about an LGBTQ+ community center that’s at risk of losing funds for HIV testing, substance use treatment and prevention, mental health counseling, and direct care for victims of crimes.
Across the board, the story was the same: Trump’s cuts to core services and programs that save lives, improve health, and educate our children are hurting the American people. The truth is, many of those cuts and Trump’s executive orders are unlawful, which is why I have taken the President to court 20 times in nearly 16 weeks.
My fellow Attorneys General and I are here to protect the American people, enforce our laws, and hold anyone who breaks them accountable — that includes President Trump.
Fighting for you today, tomorrow, and always,
Rob

Filing Four Lawsuits Against the Trump Administration in One Week
This week, my office filed four new lawsuits challenging the Trump Administration's illegal actions: We challenged the unlawful mass firing of roughly 10,000 full-time U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) employees and the closing of half of HHS’s regional offices — including one in San Francisco. We sued the Trump Administration over its unlawful attempt to freeze the development of offshore wind energy. We filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration for unlawfully withholding billions of dollars in funding approved by bipartisan majorities in Congress for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. And we challenged the President's unlawful executive order declaring a national energy emergency order and directive to expedite non-emergency permitting procedures. It shouldn't be too much to ask for a president who follows the law. But you can be sure that when he doesn't, we'll see him in court.

Securing Early Victories for Californians in Court
In a matter of hours on Tuesday, courts granted motions for preliminary injunctions in two of our lawsuits challenging the Trump Administration's unlawful actions. The first prevents the federal government from rescinding access to hundreds of millions of dollars in vital education funding while our litigation proceeds. In California alone, over $200 million in previously awarded and obligated funding is at stake. The second stops the dismantling of several federal agencies, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Minority Business Development Agency, and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, while we continue to make our case in court. We will not stop fighting to ensure these unlawful, nonsensical actions never see the light of day.

Protecting Emergency Abortion Care
Also this week, the Humboldt County Superior Court denied Providence St. Joseph Hospital’s attempt to dismiss our lawsuit alleging that the hospital violated multiple laws by refusing to provide emergency abortion care to people experiencing obstetric emergencies. Located in Eureka, Providence is the only available option for women in Humboldt County to seek emergency abortion care. There was no legal basis to dismiss our lawsuit against Providence, and we are grateful that the court agreed with us on every ground. Denying emergency abortion care to pregnant patients who need it is both traumatic and unlawful under multiple laws. My team and I look forward to seeing this case through and holding Providence accountable.

Making Your Life Affordable
From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Case Studies: Going after landlords and property management companies that illegally raise rents and unlawfully evict Californians.
What We Did: Last year, my office secured a settlement with two Bakersfield landlords to resolve allegations that they unlawfully evicted tenants and raised rents, in violation of the Tenant Protection Act (TPA). In years prior, my office also secured settlements with Invitation Homes and Green Valley Corporation, resolving allegations that the companies unlawfully increased rents — and in the case of Green Valley Corporation, also illegally evicted tenants.
What This Means to You: California DOJ is holding companies accountable for illegal behavior that raises Californians’ everyday costs. As it stands, the scarcity and high cost of housing means California's 17 million renters spend a significant portion of their paychecks on rent. Tenants’ rights are personal to me: During my time as an assemblymember, I co-authored the TPA which created significant new protections for most tenants, including limiting rent increases and prohibiting landlords from evicting tenants without just cause. Every day, millions of people worry about keeping a roof over their head — landlords and property management companies cannot make it more difficult to do so. When they do, we step in.

Keeping You Safe: Felony Charges Filed Against Fraudster
This week, my office filed felony charges against a caretaker for stealing over $400,000 from a citizen of the Pechanga Band of Indians who was a dependent adult in her care. We allege that between October 2018 and January 2021, the caretaker used the victim’s funds to pay for vacations, luxurious dinners, mortgage payments, and other personal expenses. California DOJ filed criminal charges in the Orange County Superior Court for embezzlement, theft from a dependent adult, and grand theft exceeding $100,000. We will always take action to hold accountable anyone who exploits or harms vulnerable members of our communities.
