Working with AmeriCorps was one of the most formative experiences I have ever had. I was fresh out of college when I found LEAP - Leadership, Education & Athletics in Partnership - an AmeriCorps program in New Haven, Connecticut. I was immediately drawn to their mission to serve lower-income children and families and excited to have the opportunity to work with them. To this day, I credit my time at LEAP with helping put me on the path to where I am today.
I am not alone. Every year, 200,000 Americans are inspired to volunteer with AmeriCorps — tutoring children, planting trees, building homes, helping seniors and veterans, supporting communities recovering from disasters, and more.
President Trump and Elon Musk are trying to demolish the decades-old agency that represents the best of who we are as a nation. They are slamming the door in the face of service-minded Americans who want to give back and serve our communities — and they’re doing so illegally. AmeriCorps was created and funded by Congress, a co-equal branch of government, which means Trump and Musk have no right to unilaterally dismantle it. This week I filed a lawsuit to stop them and protect our nation’s legacy of addressing critical local needs, creating public good, and fostering a stronger sense of belonging. I will not stand by while Trump and Musk break the law, violate the Constitution, and attempt to override Congress.
Your Attorney General,
Rob

Challenging the Trump Administration’s Dismantling of AmeriCorps
At the direction of President Trump, AmeriCorps has placed at least 85% of its workforce on administrative leave and notified employees that they would be terminated effective June 24, 2025. California also received notice from the federal government of termination of its AmeriCorps grant programs that support volunteer and service efforts. In response, I co-led 23 attorneys general and two states in filing a lawsuit this week against the Trump Administration. We argue that the Administration has acted unlawfully in its gutting of AmeriCorps, violating both the Administrative Procedure Act and the separation of powers under the U.S. Constitution. Congress created AmeriCorps and the programs it administers, and the President cannot incapacitate the agency’s ability to administer appropriated grants or carry out statutorily assigned duties.

Releasing the Fourth Immigration Detention Facilities Report
This week, I also released California DOJ's fourth report on immigration detention facilities operating in California. In an effort to increase transparency in these facilities, DOJ staff and a team of experts reviewed each of the six locked immigration detention facilities in our state, all of which are privately operated. Our review shows that issues previously identified have persisted, while new findings make clear that these facilities need significant improvements to fall in compliance with Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s own detention standards. A copy of the report, along with a copy of the executive summary in Spanish, can be found at the link below.

Supporting Workers’ Rights
Workers deserve a labor market free from illegal restraints. That's why, this week, I announced a lawsuit against Packers Sanitation Services, Inc. LTD., now doing business as Fortrex (PSSI), for allegedly engaging in unlawful “no poach” agreements that restrict competition and harm workers’ rights. PSSI is a national cleaning and sanitation company that contracts with dozens of meatpacking and food processing facilities in California and hundreds across the country. Filed in the San Diego Superior Court, we allege in our lawsuit that PSSI’s use of “no poach” agreements — where businesses agree not to solicit or hire each other’s employees — violated California's Unfair Competition Law.

Calling Out Law Firms for Capitulating to President Trump’s Anti-Democratic Demands
Since taking office, the President has launched a full-frontal assault on our democracy, and our legal system has played a necessary and invaluable role in these first 100 days in providing a check to his executive power. The decision by some of our nation’s largest law firms to capitulate to the President’s unreasonable, unprecedented, and frankly unconstitutional demands will only serve to embolden him further and create a chilling effect among legal professionals seeking to fairly and justly represent their clients. I stand by those firms — including Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, Jenner & Block, and Susman Godfrey — that are resisting the pressure to submit to these demands and urge those law firms that already capitulated to change course and join us in defense of rule of law.

Making Your Life Affordable
From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Case Study: Settlement with gas trading companies, SK and Vitol.
What We Did: Last year, my office announced a $50 million settlement with two gas trading firms for manipulating gas prices in Southern California.
What This Means to You: Californians should not pay more than they have to at the pump. For years, oil companies have raked in record profits while Californians have struggled to make ends meet. Whether driving to work, school, or to see family, gas is a necessary part of day-to-day life, and gas companies know it. When companies conspire to unlawfully raise prices for consumers, my office steps in, just as we did with these two gas trading firms.
As part of the settlement, I am proud to deliver money back to Californians who were impacted by gas price manipulation. Now that the settlement has received court approval, starting in late April, over a million Californians who filed valid claims before the claims submission deadline started receiving payments of approximately $21.
