Ten years ago, then-Attorney General Kamala Harris created California DOJ’s Bureau of Children’s Justice to safeguard the health and wellbeing of California’s youth, uphold their rights, and provide them every opportunity to thrive today and into the future.
The mission of the Bureau of Children’s Justice has become even more important amid the Trump Administration’s recent attacks on critical services and programs that support our children and enrich their lives.
Since taking office, the President has launched an anti-education campaign that threatens to end teacher preparation programs and yank student teachers out of our schools, dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, and freeze funding for early education programs, like Head Start. His unconstitutional attempt to end birthright citizenship threatens to strip more than 24,000 children born in California each year of their most basic rights and threatens to pull funding California families rely on, including Medi-Cal, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and foster care and adoption assistance.
It is clear that President Trump is willing to take reckless and illegal action to fulfill campaign promises at the expense of the health, education, and well-being of our nation’s children. As Attorney General and as a dad of three, I won’t allow him to forsake the law and our kids for his political gain. Nothing is more important than our children and their futures.
At your service,
Rob

Open Letter to the Legal Community
This week, I issued an open letter calling on all members of the legal profession and of state bars to stand with state attorneys general in refusing to bow to the President’s unlawful and undemocratic attacks on the practice of law and reaffirm their commitment to the zealous representation of their clients. The President's recent orders and statements seek to bully and intimidate federal judges, attorneys, and law firms that disagree with him or take positions he does not like — undermining the American legal system built atop the U.S. Constitution he two months ago swore to uphold. We must not falter in our resolve to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law. Our democracy depends on it.

Continuing to Hold the Trump Administration Accountable
My office is continuing to hold the Trump Administration accountable. This week, the President issued an unlawful executive order seeking to impose unauthorized voting restrictions. He lacks that authority — period. We stand ready to hold President Trump accountable. No matter how he tries to spin it, elections in California and across the country — in blue and red states alike — are secure. Voter fraud is largely a figment of his imagination. In addition, on Friday, we secured a preliminary injunction preventing the Trump Administration from continuing its illegal attempt to destroy the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency that looks out for consumers across the country.

Celebrating More Gun Safety Wins
Last week, a court of appeals found that California’s ban on large-capacity magazines is constitutional and consistent with the Second Amendment. This week, we celebrated two additional court victories in the fight against gun violence. First, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a 7-2 decision, upholding federal regulations that protect Americans from deadly ghost guns. The decision is not only a victory for California, but for the entire nation. Second, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California held that California’s age-based restrictions on sales and transfers of firearms are constitutional. I am proud of my team for securing this result. We will continue doing everything in our power to keep our communities and families safe from gun violence.

Reducing Wildfire Risk While Increasing Opportunity for New Housing
This week, I announced a final settlement agreement regarding the Otay Ranch Village 13 project in southwestern San Diego County. We can no longer ignore the realities of climate change, and the settlement resolves concerns pertaining to the project's wildfire and greenhouse gas impacts. Under the agreement, the project will, among other things, include the same number of units on a more compact footprint and the developer will be allowed to apply to the County of San Diego to build up to 2,750 housing units (increased from 1,938) within the more compact building area.

Making Your Life Affordable
From groceries to gas, costs seem to be rising and rising ... and rising. California DOJ has your back and is committed to protecting California families grappling with the high cost of living and the struggle to keep costs down. In this segment, find some of the ways California DOJ is protecting Californians — and their wallets.
Hot Tip: Consumers who purchased certain generic prescription drugs between May 2009 and December 2019 may be eligible to receive money back! You can check your eligibility by visiting www.AGGenericDrugs.com, calling 1-866-290-0182 (Toll-Free), or emailing info@AGGenericDrugs.com.
What We Did: This week, California DOJ joined 50 states and territories in seeking preliminary approval of a $39.1 million settlement with generic drug manufacturer Apotex over their conspiracy to inflate prices and limit competition.
What This Means to You: My team and I have worked day and night to go after companies and individuals who engage in anti-competitive practices solely to increase their profits at the expense of Californians. Our settlement not only holds Apotex accountable, but also puts money back in Californians’ pockets. The compensation people receive will be determined on a case-by-case basis and depend on, among other things, how much money they spent on the drugs at issue.

Keeping You Safe
In partnership with the recently established Sacramento Regional Human Trafficking Task Force, this week my office announced the arrest of 12 individuals for allegedly attempting to contact a minor for sex and other related crimes. The arrests are the result of a partnership between state and local law enforcement. I have a simple message for all those who target children for sex online: If you go after children, we’ll go after you.

NEW: I’m sponsoring Senator Ben Allen’s (D-Santa Monica) Senate Bill 799 to fight tax fraud.
When powerful companies use their power to cheat our government, California communities are also cheated.
