As Attorney General, public safety is, and will always be, my top priority. My office is continuing to crack down on fentanyl, human trafficking, organized retail crime, gun violence, hate crimes, and anything else that puts the safety and wellbeing of California communities at risk.
As part of our ongoing commitment to keep you safe from gun violence, my office continues to defend California's nation leading gun laws. This week, a court of appeals found that California’s ban on large-capacity magazines is constitutional and consistent with the Second Amendment, which means this commonsense restriction will stay in place and continue to prevent the injuries, deaths, and devastation caused by mass shootings. This law saves lives—I am grateful that it will continue to do so.
We're also responding to emerging threats in real time. Since President Trump took office, we have received reports of individuals impersonating U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers (ICE) and peddling other immigration-related scams. As a result, this week I issued guidance to help immigrants better understand their rights and protections under the law, including what to do if you’re approached by someone claiming to be an immigration officer. Let me be clear: it’s a crime to impersonate a federal officer and anyone who does so will be held accountable.
From preventing gun violence in our communities to going after scam artists who take advantage of vulnerable individuals, I am proud to take on any challenges the day may bring in the effort to protect your safety and wellbeing.
In your service,
Rob

Securing Important Court Win for Firearms Safety
This week, an en banc panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed that California’s large-capacity magazine ban does not violate the Second Amendment. California’s ban on large-capacity magazines has been a key component in our efforts to fight gun violence and to prevent senseless deaths and the devastation of communities and families that are left behind in the wake of mass shootings. This commonsense restriction on how many rounds a gunman can fire before they must pause to reload has been identified as a critical intervention to limit a lone shooter’s capacity to turn shootings into mass casualty attacks. The ruling is an important win — not only in this case, but in our broader efforts to protect California communities from gun violence.

Warning Against ICE Impersonators and Other Immigration Scams
Also this week, I reminded Californians to take steps to protect themselves amid new reports of individuals impersonating ICE officers and other immigration scams. If you have been the victim of an immigration scam or have information about an individual impersonating an ICE officer, please report it to local law enforcement. In recent months, my office has released additional guidance to help California immigrants better understand their rights and protections under the law and assist law enforcement, prosecutors, and public institutions in complying with state law. The full set of guidance, many available in multiple languages, can be accessed at oag.ca.gov/immigrant/resources. The alert is available in Spanish here.

Opposing the Trump Administration's Unlawful Actions
At California DOJ, we continue to push back against the Trump Administration's unlawful actions. Along with our lawsuit challenging the mass firing of employees at the U.S. Department of Education from last week, my team is closely monitoring the implementation of the President's recent executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take action to dismantle the Department of Education. I also spoke out this week against the Trump Administration’s illegal firing of the two Commissioners at the Federal Trade Commission. Rest assured: I will continue to take all necessary legal action to protect the rights of Californians and uphold the rule of law.

Reminding Californians of Their Right to Delete Their Data from 23andMe
The genetics testing and information company 23andMe has publicly reported that it is in financial distress and has stated in securities filings that there is substantial doubt about its ability to continue. This week, I reminded customers of 23andMe that California has robust privacy laws that allow consumers to take control and request that a company delete their genetic data. Given 23andMe’s reported financial distress and the trove of sensitive consumer data 23andMe has amassed, I encourage Californians to consider invoking their rights and directing 23andMe to delete their data and destroy any samples of genetic material held by the company. Californians who want to invoke these rights can do so by following the steps in the link below.

Hot Tip: Through the IRS Direct File and CalFile programs, eligible California taxpayers can file their 2024 federal and state taxes for free!
What We Did: This week, we issued a consumer alert urging folks to learn about free or low-cost tax filing options.
What This Means to You: For many families, tax season brings an opportunity to get a catch up on bills, build some financial breathing room for emergencies, or finally take the car in for repairs. As Tax Day approaches, many Californians turn to third-party tax preparation services for help filing their tax returns and too often wind up paying when they could file for free.
