The past week has been challenging for many.
Wildfires continue to devastate Southern California, destroying homes and displacing thousands across the region. While families impacted by the fires seek shelter, emergency services, and respite, there are others who seek to prey on them to turn a profit — unlawfully raising rents and lodging rates, looting homes, and more.
This week also saw the transition to a new federal administration, and with it, an onslaught of executive orders and announcements that have left many feeling scared, uncertain, and unsafe. From an unconstitutional attempt to revoke birthright citizenship that has been temporarily blocked, to an attempt to bully state and local law enforcement into carrying out his mass deportation agenda, to attacks on our LGBTQ+ community and on abortion rights, President Trump has wasted no time in coming after our people, rights, and values.
I want to assure you, that as California Attorney General, I am here to serve, protect, and defend all Californians. Be it going after greedy price gougers, standing up for vulnerable communities, or defending our hard-fought rights in court — I’m here to protect the public's safety and pursue justice for all 39 million people who call this state home.
In your service,
Rob

Holding the Trump Administration Accountable
During the first Trump Administration, DOJ fought to stop illegal rollbacks and proposals that would’ve harmed the well-being, health, safety, and civil rights of our people and of people across the country. With a second Trump Administration now a reality, we are ready once again to defend Californians if the President breaks the law. This week, I filed a lawsuit challenging his unconstitutional executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship. As home of Wong Kim Ark, a San Francisco native who fought — successfully — to have his U.S. citizenship recognized, California condemns the President’s attempts to erase history and ignore 125 years of Supreme Court precedent. A federal judge has already recognized that the executive order is unconstitutional. Further, my office is actively reviewing all of the President's other deeply concerning actions, including those targeting our immigrant community, our LGBTQ+ community, and abortion rights.

Filing Charges Against Real Estate Agent for Price Gouging
As I have said repeatedly, the price gouging related to the Los Angeles wildfires must stop. On Wednesday, we made good on our promise to hold price gougers accountable and announced the filing of charges against a real estate agent for attempting to price gouge a couple who lost their home in the Eaton Fire. Our investigation revealed that the couple applied to rent a home but after their application was received, they were informed that the price increased by 38%. Penal Code section 396 generally prohibits raising the price of lodging and rental housing after an emergency is declared by more than 10% of the previously charged price. We’re continuing to investigate reports of price gouging and will aggressively pursue anyone trying to make a quick buck off Californians’ pain.

Securing $7.4 Billion Settlement from Purdue Pharma and Sackler Family for Fueling Opioid Crisis
The opioid epidemic has ravaged communities in California and across the country, forever changing society as we know it. My office has been committed to fighting this crisis, and earlier this week, we announced that we are holding accountable two of the worst perpetrators: Purdue Pharma and the Sackler Family. Specifically, we have reached a $7.4 billion settlement in principle with them that ends the Sacklers’ control of Purdue Pharma and ability to sell opioids in the United States, and will deliver funding directly to communities across the country over the next 15 years to support opioid addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery programs.

In addition, I held the fifth and final DOJ regional convening on immigrant rights in San Diego. I want to be clear that California will not waiver in its commitment to upholding the rights and protections of all of our residents, including the nearly 11 million immigrants who call this state home. We hear your concerns, and we will continue to use the full force of the law and tools of this office to stand up for you. Supporting Commonsense Gun Regulations
While people travel to work, to their homes, or with their children, they should not have fear gun violence. It is commonsense that loaded guns do not belong on buses, trains, or subways. The U.S. Supreme Court has also acknowledged that states have the authority to enact reasonable restrictions to protect communities, including sensitive places restrictions on where guns may be carried. That is why, as part of a multistate coalition, I filed an amicus brief in support of Illinois in Schoenthal v. Raoul, a case pending in the Seventh Circuit involving a challenge to Illinois’s ban on carrying firearms on public transportation.

The impact of President Trump’s unconstitutional birthright citizenship executive order would be truly devastating.
We will not allow our president to willfully violate the rights of U.S. citizens and get away with it.
