It is no coincidence that California boasts some of the nation’s strongest worker protections and is the fifth largest economy in the world. In the Golden State, we know that you can protect workers and profits at the same time, and in fact, our economy benefits when we do.
Unfortunately there are still too many who are willing to skirt California’s labor laws to make an extra buck.
California DOJ won’t stand idly by as businesses, or the people who run them, steal from workers and defraud the state. This week we announced the filing of 31 criminal charges against US Framing West and two employees for grand theft, payroll tax evasion, wage theft, and filing false documents with the state. California workers will always have a partner and advocate in our office — you can count on it.
In solidarity,
Rob Bonta

Announcing Criminal Charges for Tax Evasion, Wage Theft
Between 2018 and 2022, US Framing West provided framing construction for multiple projects across California using crews of unlicensed subcontractors. While working these projects, US Framing West allegedly committed grand theft, payroll tax evasion, prevailing wage theft, and filed false documents with the State. I want to thank our union partners for alerting us to this case and for fighting every day to ensure good jobs, fair wages, and safe conditions for California workers. I also want to express my gratitude to the state agencies who assisted with our investigation.

Preparing to Defend California's People, Progress, Values
In preparation for new legal challenges arising from potential actions by the incoming Trump Administration, my office is working in conjunction with the Governor and the Legislature to ensure we have the resources we need to meet to the demands of the moment and robustly defend California’s people, progress, and values. The Special Session, called by Governor Newsom earlier this month, begins tomorrow.
During the first Trump Administration, California DOJ filed more than 120 lawsuits against the federal government to protect vital services and resources. Our lawsuit blocking the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census helped ensure that California continues receiving billions of dollars in federal funding annually to fund programs and services; and our lawsuit challenging the unlawful imposition of immigration conditions on federal grants for local and state law enforcement resulted in the federal government returning tens of millions of dollars to California — among countless other examples.
