Throughout California, charities are working tirelessly to serve our local communities. They’re providing assistance to families during challenging times, scholarships to our future leaders, helping our veterans, and so much more to truly make a difference. It’s why I encourage you to support charities and their incredible causes.
Unfortunately, there are those who seek to take advantage of your generosity. As Attorney General, I’m working every day to protect Californians from deception and ensure donations are used for their intended charitable purpose.
This upcoming Charity Fraud Awareness Week, I invite you to join our Office of Community Awareness, Response, and Engagement’s (CARE) Community Briefing to learn about giving safely to charities and how charities can prevent fraud. You can find the details below.
Together, we can ensure your donations are spent for the good you intend.
In solidarity,
Rob

Strengthening Protections for Youth in Los Angeles County Juvenile Halls
This week, following alarming reports from an independent monitor about the continued deterioration of conditions at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Secure Youth Treatment Facility in Sylmar and Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey, I announced filing a joint motion with the County of Los Angeles to strengthen oversight and accountability at these facilities. The County of Los Angeles is responsible for safeguarding the safety and well-being of the children at its juvenile halls — and it has utterly failed in this responsibility to date. My office will be watching closely and is ready to take further action, if needed.

Defending California's Immigrant Communities
As the reality of a second Trump Administration takes hold, I know there is a great deal of fear, sadness, anxiety, and panic — especially among our immigrant communities. This week, I was interviewed by several media outlets, and I sent a clear message: the California Department of Justice is ready to protect and defend our immigrant communities from any unlawful action that Trump takes.

Responding to Court Decision on Huntington Beach’s Unlawful Voter ID Policy
Under both existing law and Senate Bill 1174, all local governments — including charter cities like Huntington Beach — are prohibited from disenfranchising voters at the polls by implementing voter ID requirements. Let me be clear: that has not changed. We disagree with the Orange County Superior Court’s recent decision that it is too early to bring our lawsuit, and remain confident in the strength of our case.

Reminder: You May Be Eligible for a Gas Settlement Payment
Market manipulation and price gouging are illegal and unacceptable, particularly during times of crisis when people are most vulnerable. California residents who purchased gas in Southern California between February 20, 2015 and November 10, 2015 can now submit a claim for a payment under the state’s settlement with gas trading firms for tampering with and manipulating prices for California gasoline. Eligible Californians may submit a claim online at www.CalGasLitigation.com.
