I know there is a great deal of fear, sadness, anxiety, and panic as the reality of a second Trump Administration sets in. It is understandable — we have been here before and know what he has in store.
I want to reassure you that in California, progress will prevail.
No matter who is in the White House or who holds control of Congress, in California we will keep moving forward. As Attorney General, I will continue to use the full force of the law and full authority of my office to address injustice, fight for your rights, and protect all people. That is my promise to you.
In solidarity,
Rob

Protecting California's People, Values, and Resources

Holding Norwalk Accountable for Violating State Housing Laws
This week, I was joined by Governor Gavin Newsom and California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Director Gustavo Velasquez in filing a lawsuit against the City of Norwalk over its unlawful ban on new housing for California’s most vulnerable residents, including emergency shelters, single-room occupancy housing, transitional housing, and supportive housing. Every city and county in California has a legal obligation to help solve our homelessness crisis. We have not, and will not hesitate to ensure that everyone with the power to approve or disapprove housing takes their duties seriously.

Blocking Anticompetitive Mergers
Also this week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit affirmed the lower court's decision to end the anticompetitive Northeast Alliance, which enabled two of the largest airlines in the United States, JetBlue and American Airlines, to function like a single carrier on certain routes. From more expensive tickets to lower quality service, the Northeast Alliance was anticompetitive and harmful to consumers nationwide. I am proud to have worked with federal and state partners to secure this important win for consumers.

Securing Funds to Address the Opioid Epidemic
Additionally, my office announced the completion of a $1.37 billion settlement agreement with Kroger, addressing the grocery chain’s role in the opioid epidemic. California will receive up to $122 million for opioid abatement, with payments anticipated to begin early next year. The funds secured in this settlement will allow the state and eligible cities and counties to continue addressing the harms inflicted by this epidemic through comprehensive prevention, treatment and recovery programs, and other resources. To date, my office has secured nearly $50 billion in nationwide opioid settlements and bankruptcies.

Addressing Threats to Reproductive Healthcare
Abortion care is healthcare; and in California, access to abortion care is a constitutionally protected right. With a legal bulletin issued this week, my office is providing state and local law enforcement agencies with the tools and support necessary to respond effectively and lawfully to threatening or violent situations and ensure those who provide or seek reproductive healthcare services are protected. At the California Department of Justice, we will always defend reproductive rights and ensure California remains a beacon of reproductive freedom.
