Human trafficking is a crime where abusers target our most vulnerable, and it all too often lurks behind the excitement and popularity of big events, games, and attractions.
This week, during San Diego Comic-Con, a DOJ-led task force arrested 14 suspected perpetrators; and offered support, services, and opportunities for healing and healthy pathways forward to 10 survivors, including a 16-year-old.
While this operation was a success, it is also a chilling reminder of the enduring threat of human trafficking and the despicable conduct that often traps vulnerable individuals. Whether the Golden State is your home or you travel here to attend our world-class events — every person deserves to safely enjoy all that California has to offer. You have my word: I will continue to put the full force of this office into going after anyone who exploits another human being.
In your service,
Rob

Cracking Down on Sex Trafficking
From July 25 to 27, 2024, the California Department of Justice’s San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force worked undercover to identify and contact potential survivors of trafficking and arrest their abusers. Such criminal behavior will not be tolerated and we will do all we can to support survivors.

Holding Smash-and-Grab Robbers Accountable
This week, I also announced the sentencing of eight people involved in “smash and grab” robberies carried out at high-end retail stores in Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties from May 11, 2023 to August 23, 2023. One of those incidents included the well-publicized Nordstrom robbery at Westfield Topanga Mall.
These crimes, which resulted in a loss of over $1.7 million, hurt our businesses and posed a serious threat to our communities. I am thankful to our local law enforcement partners and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their collaboration in this battle against organized retail crime.

Supporting Commonsense Gun Laws
In addition, as part of a coalition of 19 attorneys general, I filed an amicus brief in support of a Minnesota law setting the minimum age at 21 for securing a permit to carry a handgun in public. We stand with Minnesota and other states in their efforts to curb gun violence through these kinds of commonsense firearm regulations aimed at improving public safety. States must have the ability to protect their citizens and communities from gun violence.

Price gouging during a state of emergency is illegal. This week, I issued consumer alerts following Governor Gavin Newsom’s declarations of a state of emergency in Kern, Plumas, Butte, and Tehama Counties due to the various fires burning across our state.
Californians who believe they have been the victim of price gouging should report it to their local authorities or to my office at oag.ca.gov/report. California law generally prohibits charging a price that exceeds, by more than 10%, the price of an item before a state or local declaration of emergency.
The consumer alerts are available here and here.
