As so many hardworking families struggle to afford everything from gas and groceries, to housing and healthcare, the path to the California Dream only becomes more narrow. It is critical that we do all we can to widen that path.
As Attorney General, I am proud to defend consumers and a level playing field, to fight for fair pricing and competition, and to hold accountable greedy corporations and scam artists that prey on working families and vulnerable communities.
This week, that included securing a $50 million settlement with oil and gas companies that secretly worked together to tamper with and manipulate gas prices. It also included urging consumers impacted by a data breach at Change Healthcare to take advantage of free credit monitoring and identity theft protections made available to them. And it included issuing a consumer alert to help protect service members, veterans, and their families from common scams and frauds that target our military community.
As your AG, I am here to stand up for all consumers, because all consumers deserve a fair deal.
In solidarity,
Rob

Holding Big Oil Accountable
Petroleum companies should not get to reap mass profits out of the pockets of hardworking Californians through illegal market manipulation. This week, I announced a $50 million settlement with Vitol, Inc. and SK Energy Americas, Inc., along with its parent company SK Trading International, resolving allegations that they took advantage of the market disruption following a February 2015 explosion at a gasoline refinery in Torrance, California to engage in a scheme to drive up gas prices.

Protecting our Military Community
In recognition of Military Consumer Month, I issued a consumer alert to help protect California service members, veterans, and their family members from common scams and fraud. I urge California’s military community to learn the scam warning signs, bring a buddy when engaging in major transactions, and take a tactical pause when an offer seems too good to be true. You can report fraud to your local military or civilian law enforcement agency, or to the California Department of Justice at www.oag.ca.gov/report.

Fighting Ongoing Housing Discrimination
This week, I also joined a coalition of 18 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in support of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Discriminatory Effects Rule. The rule was adopted by HUD to implement the federal Fair Housing Act, which aims to root out racial and other forms of prohibited discrimination from housing and housing-related services. I fully support the Biden Administration as it defends the rule in court.

Resource Corner
I issued a consumer alert sharing resources and raising awareness about the availability of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services following Change Healthcare’s February data breach. The cyberattack against Change Healthcare put the personal information of far too many consumers at risk. My office is committed to protecting the rights of patients and consumers, including those affected by data breaches.
The consumer alert is available here.
