Here in the Golden State, we pride ourselves on being a bastion for inclusivity, diversity, and hope. Even so, we continue to witness devastating attacks against our LGBTQ+ family, friends, and neighbors. Undeniably, we’ve made progress, but the fight for civil rights continues to be at the forefront of our work at DOJ. This work is critical considering that here in California, almost 3 million people identify as LGBTQ+ — that’s more than any state across the country!
As the People’s Attorney, I remain steadfast in my commitment to being an ally and to safeguarding the rights, freedoms, and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community.
Which is why, this week, I was proud to release our annual State of Pride Report. It includes information about efforts DOJ has taken to eradicate hate in our communities, data on how California compares to the rest of the nation in protections for LGBTQ+ folks, resources about LGBTQ+ rights, and so much more.
At DOJ, we’ll keep fighting to ensure the LGBTQ+ community is recognized, celebrated, and protected. We know that love wins, every time.
Happy Pride month!

Supporting and Defending LGBTQ+ Communities
As our State of Pride Report makes clear, homophobia and transphobia endanger our communities. This rise of hate is unacceptable, and we will not stand for it.
We will continue to stand firm against those who seek to dismantle the progress we have made

Protecting Our Kids’ Online Data
This week, I announced a $500,000 settlement with Tilting Point Media LLC resolving allegations that the company illegally collected and shared children’s data without parental consent in their popular mobile app game “SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off.” As our kids spend an increasing amount of time online, both on websites and using mobile apps, we will use every enforcement tool to ensure compliance with the law and that companies exercise diligence with privacy law requirements.

Ensuring Housing Availability and Affordability
This week, I filed a notice of appeal to reverse a judgment by the Los Angeles County Superior Court that would prevent my office from enforcing Senate Bill 9 against five charter cities. Under Senate Bill 9, local agencies must provide a “ministerial," or streamlined, approval process for homeowners to build a duplex on, or subdivide into two lots, a lot zoned for single-family homes. Every Californian should have access to dignified housing.

Securing Accountability for Violations of Patients’ Rights
No woman should be penalized for the loss of her pregnancy. That’s why, this week, I announced a settlement with Adventist Health Hanford resolving allegations that the company made unauthorized disclosures to law enforcement of the medical information of two patients. Both patients went to Adventist seeking medical assistance, suffered stillbirths at the hospital, and were prosecuted for murder and incarcerated due to the unlawful disclosures.

Safeguarding the Rights of Victims
Victims of sexual assault deserve to be supported in both word and deed. This week, I issued an information bulletin to all California law enforcement agencies and public crime laboratories, summarizing their new responsibilities under Senate Bill 464. Authored by Senator Aisha Wahab (D-Hayward), Senate Bill 464 amends victims’ rights and requires an audit of all untested sexual assault evidence kits.

Picture of the Week

Together with law enforcement partners, I announced the arrests of four suspects in Tulare County, and the seizure of a large cache of illegal firearms, magazines, drugs, ammunition, and cash. In our efforts to retrieve guns from one individual determined to be prohibited through the Armed and Prohibited Persons (APPS) database, we uncovered an entire network of illegal activity. The APPS database works to identify individuals who lawfully procured firearms and later became prohibited from owning or possessing them.
