As California’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer, protecting public safety is job #1. Some days that means confiscating illegal weapons, while other days it might involve seizing illicit drugs, cracking down on organized retail theft, or tackling our epidemic of gun violence.
This week, our work at California DOJ encompassed all of that, and more.
We seized over 60 pounds of narcotics and 27 guns, and arrested 41 members of an organized criminal group in Merced County. We charged four suspects in San Diego with 30 felony counts for stealing more than $1.5 million from jewelry stores throughout the state. And we convened community leaders for a gun violence prevention roundtable in the Central Valley.
Our work looks different week to week, but rest assured that regardless of our specific actions, the safety of all Californians is my top priority.
In solidarity,
Rob

Making Communities Safer
Our work to improve public safety in California is saving lives and making communities more secure. This week, my office, along with local, state, and federal partners, announced the results of “Operation Red Rooster,” an effort targeting an organized criminal group and its activities in Merced County. The operation resulted in 41 arrests, and the seizure of over 60 pounds of narcotics and 27 guns. The suspects are facing homicide, attempted homicide, gun trafficking, and drug trafficking charges.

Addressing Gun Violence
In California, we know our gun safety laws work and we have the data to prove it. But even California is not immune to the uniquely American disease of gun violence. That’s why we’re doubling down on California’s gun safety efforts. This week, I was proud to meet with leaders from across Central California for a roundtable discussion to advance our efforts to prevent gun violence and protect survivors.

Cracking Down on Organized Retail Crime
Organized retail crime harms businesses, retailers, and consumers – and puts the public at risk. This week, in San Diego, we charged four people for their alleged involvement in an organized retail crime ring that targeted high-end jewelry stores throughout California. Our office has filed felony charges, including organized retail theft, robbery, burglary, and grand theft against the suspects. We’ll continue working with partners to keep our communities, businesses, and consumers safe from retail theft and other crimes.

Holding Big Plastic Accountable
For years, the plastics industry has engaged in an aggressive campaign to deceive the public, perpetuating a myth that recycling can solve the plastics waste and pollution crisis. Enough is enough. This week, my office filed suit against plastics industry associations to seek compliance with DOJ's first-of-its-kind investigation into the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries for their role in causing the plastics pollution crisis.

Protecting Consumers
The 2008 financial crisis absolutely blindsided families and homeowners who thought they were in a safe and stable place. We want to do all we can to make sure that doesn’t happen again. This week, we celebrated a decision by the Supreme Court rejecting a sweeping rule that would have hindered the ability of states to protect consumers from financial exploitation and abusive lending. My office remains committed to guarding and enforcing laws that protect consumers.

Beware of AI and Phone Scams
This week, I issued an alert for all Californians regarding phone and AI scams. Scammers are often quite literally in our pockets, just a phone call, social media message, or text away. I encourage everyone to review the alert to protect yourself and your families, and learn what to do in case you are targeted.
Here are some quick tips:
- Protect your Social Security number and other sensitive information.
- Beware of government impersonations and other common scams.
- Let phone calls from unfamiliar calls go to voicemail.
- Don't trust caller ID. Be wary if anything seems different about the caller or if they ask for financial or personal information.
- If you suspect a scam call, immediately hang up.
- Take advantage of call-blocking technology.
- Develop family code words.
- Minimize personal audio/video content on social media accounts.
- Check privacy settings on social media.
- Take advantage of call-blocking technology.
- Don't click on suspicious links.
- Go directly to a company website you are familiar with rather than clicking on a link that has been sent to you.
- Use strong passwords.
